I will do the smog check at the end of September.

In June I have an oil change, spark plug replacement, tie rod end job, PCV valve replacement scheduled. the air filter is clean. The oil will get changed once more

My car is a 1996. What about timing? There is no check engine light on. Is this a concern? The original factory settings in that regard have never been changed. It has always passed smog before. What else might you suggest?

It is a 1996 Toyota Avalon.

I would toss a bottle of Redline Sl-1 on that list, otherwise stay the course until it doesn't pass or a CEL pops up.

If the car is running electronic ignition you have nothing to worry about as far as timing. If it is running a distributor setup then its worth looking at periodically.

I have never once touched timing on any electronic ignition car I've owned, I wouldn't even know how.

You can adjust timing on some Toyotas of that vintage. While the ignition is electronic, it may have a distributor that can be adjusted, and therefore, should be checked. I haven't peeked under the hood of an Avalon for a while - given a picture, we could tell....

I am fairly certain that the 1996 Avalon had a waste spark ignition. There would be no way to alter timing without reprogramming the computer.
