Tundra Bed Liner or Spray

Spray in is the way to go.
We have had two trucks with LineX and like it. No complaints.
LineX is a very nice product but expensive. You can get a heavy duty bed liner for about $150. My F-150 has some kind of spray in liner and I put a bed liner in it as well. The bed liner keeps things from slipping around because it's a very heavy rubber mat.
Rubber mats are nice because they don't allow things to slip all around as much plus they aren't near as pricey as a spray in. My GMC has a factory spray in. Stuff slides all over the place.

I have a rubber bed mat in my F150. I like it because you can take it out if your hauling mulch or something messey. It also doesn't scratch items you place in the bed. Like bicycles, fishing poles, trim.
If you get spray in liner, you still need a rubber mat to keep things from sliding.
My truck has the spray-in, which was already installed when I bought it. My preference would be rubber mat only.

A heavy rubber mat protects against dents up to a point and things don't slide and is less money. Bedliner protects the whole inside against scratches dents not so much and is slipperyer. What damage does son need to protect against?
None that I am aware of??? He’s never paid this much for a vehicle and he just wants to protect it.

I'd start with a good rubber mat and see how it goes. I had them in 2 trucks and was perfectly happy with them and I use the truck as a truck, but I'm careful and don't beat the snot out of anything. Current truck has factory bedliner and it's fine but if it didn't I'd have a mat. May have had Husky brand, can't remember. Get a thick one. If his use is scratching the wheel wells and bed sides he can always get it lined.
My experience with just a rubber mat is that water can get trapped under there ad cause rust over time. Best bet is apply Linux and THEN add the rubber mat. Costs more but with high priced trucks that you want to keep for a long time, this is the only way to go!
He didn't mention year of the Tundra, but the new ones (2022+) have a composite bed. Rust may not be an issue.

I have the Line-X spray in liner in my 2012 Tundra and have had no issues. Highly recommend.

I've done several applications on dump beds now. Its very DYI-able if you want to go the cheap route.
Sand the paint lightly, clean with whatever you have.
Buy a gallon or so, roll it on or a simple paintbrush. The paint levels out on its own and looks good. No fancy process needed.

I would highly recommend a spray-in liner. Both of my Tundras have had it. The first had a RhinoLiner, and my current one is the factory liner. Both stood up to various loads very well. My concern with the rubber liner is that it might hold moisture under the liner, which could lead to rust. The bed floors on Gen 2 Tundras (and Gen 2.5) are prone to rusting, although they typically do so from the bottom up. I would recommend he rust-proof the truck too, it's their biggest weakness IMO.
