Trusting the dipstick?

One of mine takes five quarts and is approx ¼ quart low on stick after refill when changing... If I add a quart when at the ADD mark it'll be slightly over full by the stick... The other has a six quart sump and is exactly on add with five qt and on full with six... Go figure... I don't let it bother me, as long as it's above add it's fine and if slightly below, I'll get around to it in a week or two...

I checked the Cobalt about ten minutes after an interstate run and shutdown at a gas station on a level surface I think. Read a quarter above low.

Let the car sit overnight and check cold in the driveway it showed a quarter below full.

So hot versus cold can apparently produce a pint difference in the capacity.

Mercedes-Benz 'workshop' procedure is to measure oil level up from the bottom of the sump with a calibrated "measuring tool" through the extraction tube.
I use their AFT dipstick (722.6xx requires similar procedure) or some $.50 dowel.

Pretty clever those M-B engineers as doing so eliminates all the other variables and simply measures static oil level from the reciprocating assembly (as designed).

MFD also shows extrapolated liter/quart capacity...even whilst running. Pretty slick.

Just OCD and anal retentive enough to appeal to my sensibilities.

The car is a turbo. An API SL 5w30 for 7500 miles is a pretty horrid OCI. Somebody wasnt thinking.

What is the hurry Lightninrod?

Are automakers in such a frenzy to add complexity and completely ditch the vehicle from four years ago while they create a "new platform" that they forgot how to make a dipstick?

Ford apparently hasn't perfected the spark plug..........

I'm sorry but I don't know what your first sentence means.

I think, as humans, we tend to increase in errors when being pushed, hurried or put on the spot. I was referring to the automakers who seem to be rush, rush, rush trying to get the next model out that they forget stuff.

Analogy.....

Aww man look at my new shoes! State of the art, lightweight materials from Mars, super duper shock absorbtion, flashy coloring, its got it all..............then you go to run in them and brake your ankle because the laces that have been in use for "ever" were stolen from, forgot about or whatever.

Like, man this stuff is top of the line, is high output but wont start because they were so busy and narrow minded making this one tree grow taller that the rest of the forest died as a result....

....keep going???

Sling Blade? Analogy. Man this mower has new spindles, new rings, bored .040 over with a 3/4 cam, high flowing soup can exhaust, the highest octane gas oxygen enriched race fuel, balanced 3-in-1 blade, titanium deck, adjustable throttle, blah blah. But when I started it it ran for thirty seconds and died. So I call customer service and explain the issue. They sent a courier to come to the house to load it onto a truck, ship it overseas to the tech center, hire a translator, and I wait three to six weeks. Diagnosis? No oil in it.

It seems we cannot rest one minute and enjoy the fruits of our intense work, hard labor, professional training, etcetera because every time we have a great idea we put all the profits into changing it, then kaput! We went beyond diminishing returns into complete failure.

So the automaker invested all of their time, money, knowledge, expertise into what exactly? Trying to eek a mpg out of the ESTIMATED fuel mileage, make a square peg fit into a round hole, shoehorn a V8 into a inline four chassis or use the complex VTEC system to make a engine perform great at both the street and the track? I do not exactly understand. As I said sometime ago here on Bob, Are the engineers bored?

I understand r and d, but if your new company made a million dollars, would you want to take a break, feed the hungry, travel the world, or keep a hundred bucks for rent and invest the rest back into the company? Like the two fishers.. One said you could have it great if you expanded your operation. The other said what will that get me? The other said, exactly what you have now.

Did anyone see the Boeing video on GJ? About their anniversary? Instead of keep making the 747 as they have been for years, they experiment with it and basically mess up the concept. I guess 'some' of this is what helps make stuff better, but I guess it also kind of negates any flourishing we got as a benefit from our work success.

It is a difficult line to draw, seems to me, to set apart never leaving the house to driving an 18-wheeler style from the eighties, crunk up on yella jackets doing 80mph 20 hours a day. Like engineering the nutrition out of our food, I guess!

Mine is the same way! I'm torn between filling it to "Full" on the 'stick, or just dumping in 6 qts during an oil change. Just changed it the other day, and dumped in 6 qts.

I always dump in 6 per the manual. From there I add as the level decreases. There are numbers on the dipstick and 6qt lands perfectly on the number "1" which is about 1/2" above the full mark. The "1" is my full mark. I usually add 1/2 qt at the 5k mark to put it back close to the "1". Works well for me.

I've heard several complaints on the 07-08 Silverados concerning dipstick accuracy.
