The truck is cold but not too cold yet to start...the engine starts but the oil doesn't flow for several minutes and from the sound of it it is obvious.

Walk away and go inside while the truck warms up.... listening to that sound will make a BITOGer cry.

I know that sound WELL!!!!

I used to work at a truck stop when I was going to school. We had a Chevy plow truck (this is New Brunswick) with the 6.5L in it.

Firing that old girl up when it's -30 WITHOUT the wind-chill factor and the whole truck is rocking so hard you think the engine is going to walk off the motor mounts.....

Is your engine a GR Series (2GR-FE). I think that starting with model year 2007 the Sienna came with that engine. I have the 4GR-FSE in my car. There was a recall or TSB from Toyota having to do with the pin which holds the valves in position when the engine is turned off or something like that. I believe that the problem was most noticeable after the vehicle had sit for several days. From the accounts I read, it was a terrible sound.

The TSB describes it as a brief sound, but according to owners whose cars were affected, it was LOUD and lasted more than one second.

Oil falling off the parts was not the culprit in any way.

I did the same for the Expedition. Only this time I also changed the coolant as well. It took over an hour for these to be accomplished. I forgot to even put oil in the car. I turned it on, and turned on the lights and a/c to force a faster warm up. I sat there a full minute before I realized I had no oil in the engine, let alone a dry filter. There was no unusual noises at all. It was as quiet as normal.

Who knows the difference?

Just do not tell any one Doc!

I have learned a little trick...the first time I start the engine after a filter change, I hold the gas pedal to the floor and give it a couple of long cranks. This shuts off the injectors and lets the oil pump fill the filter. Then I fully release the gas pedal and start as normal.

Why not just pre-fill the filter? Seems a lot easier to me...

^^ I`ve always prefilled the filter on every oil change I`ve ever done.

4GRFSE, no this is not the 97 Sienna engine - this is a 1MZ-FE.

Thinking back about it, I think it was only 7 or 8 days since the car had been last started. It's now (and will be) sitting idle again - I'm thinking about waiting the same time period and start it with the ST filter. Scary, but that would answer the issue (for this car anyway) - and will let me know if I need to do an OC.
