Just got a like new Troy Bilt XP series lawn mower with a B&S engine for $100! Model # is 12akd39b011.
I have searched everywhere including Troy Bilt's web site and cannot find OCI and oil requirements. Anyone have the knowledge I seek?

In Florida my top choice would be a 10w30 synthetic, but you could run a mineral 10w30 or SAE 30 if you're cheap. Favorite oil would be Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W30.

You could also get away with a 0w40,5w40,10w40 gas or dual rated oil if you have any laying around.

5w30 synthetic is great too but a mineral 5w30 will burn off faster and requires an oil level check more frequently.

B&S latest oil recommendation for all B&S engines is 5w30 Preferred flowed by 10w30. I picked Pennzoil Platinum in 10w30 for my Briggs here in Florida. Ed

Thanks everyone!! This is why i love this site! Air cooled loves thick oil. I will probably change 3 times a year (Florida) using 10w-30 oil that is on sale.

3 times a year seems a bit excessive, how many hours a year do you put on it? Unless you're running a lawn care business 1 time per year with a synthetic 10w30 is good

I fat fingered the keyboard. Twice a year. Very hot and dusty here.

one a year or 50 hours

I will rack up 50 hours in about 7 months. Thanks for the info!

B&S seems to recommend synthetic 5w30 as the general all purpose oil these days. That being said, I am converting my B&S OPE over to 5w40 Rotella T6. Anything Honda powered still gets 5w30 of the Mobil1 high mileage flavor.

Close. Briggs number one recommendation for a Florida climate would be SYNTHETIC 5W30, followed by SAE30, followed by conventional 10W30.

OP, SuperTech SAE30 is about $2.40/quart at Wal-Mart. Perfect for your needs. If you want to get fancy, the cheapest synthetic 5W30 or 10W30 you can find will also do well.
