I got a Troy Bilt TB516EC 4 stroke edger. I've been wrenching on small engines 30 plus years but I've never had my hands on what looks like a weedeater head that says 4 stroke but is a cart style edger. Reading the manual it says SAE-30 for the oil which I haven't seen as the only recommendation in a while. Given its age and its lack of use the last 4 years I was curious if anyone would recommend a synthetic or a different designation like 5W-?/10W-?

Any 5w-30 / 10w-30 should work fine. These types of engines aren't that demanding IMO. I'm currently running a synthetic HPL 5w-30 in my mower and a HPL 0w-30 in my Snow blower. I know it's overkill but the HPL oil was extra oil in the garage so I used it . :)

Whatever 30 grade is fine. Only in commercial applications is it worth using thicker since they're ran all day long but the oil rarely gets hot in these home units.
