Troy-Bilt Self-Propelled Lawn Mower Problem

Hi guys, hope you are all doing well. I have a Troy-Bilt 12AI836M011, and it's a RWD model. The rear wheels no longer move when I engage them. Not sure where to start troubleshooting.

It'd be great if any of you could provide any help.

If the belt is not broken it could well be a transmission problem. Mine went out and had a new transmission installed under warranty.

All I needed was the receipt. Check with where you purchased it or cal the company to find a local repair shop that handles their warranty.

No out of pocket cost because of the warranty. It was replaced almost 2 years ago now and no further issues.

Aside from the belt or transmission, it could be as simple as a broken cable? Can you see the belt or pulleys moving when you pull the lever?

I checked the belt and it's tight.
I believe the cable is fine as well.

I'm also thinking it's the transmission. Luckily, they only sell for about $45. It seems that it's very labor intensive though.

Do you know how long the warranty is? I believe I bought this in 2008, I should have the receipt.

Check their web site. Think it is 2 years from date of purchase?

Yep, I've heard an OPE shop guy or three comment on the reliability of these trans-axles. Not good, but they're not terribly expensive to replace. I don't know exactly what breaks on them. It's pretty much break and replace.

I checked that, and it looks like new.

Thanks everyone for the responses. It look's like I'll need to order a transmission for it, and hopefully it's easy to install. I've already disassembled most of the lawn mower, but it looks like there is still a lot more to be taken off to get to the transmission.

It's not really an easy install. I helped someone swap the transmission on one of these and it was the worst small mower transmission I've ever done. A Toro or Honda is a piece of cake in comparison. I really don't know what MTD was thinking when they came up with this overly complex design.

I wish I knew that MTD was [censored], before I spend near $400 to purchase this back in 2008. lol, I would have bought something else.

This [censored] mower only lasted 3 years, the transmission died at the end of summer last year but I didn't bother fixing it as summer was just about over.
