I need to track down the source of an exhaust leak in my 1994 Ford F250 7.3 IDI diesel. Exhaust fumes are apparent (slight odor) with the heater on when the vehicle is driven at highway speed. As the engine is noisy, it impossible the hear any exhaust leaks. I am looking for cheap and simple way to generate some white smoke to look for leaks. Sparingly spray diesel fuel or atf in intake ? Generate smoke (how) and blow it in through tail pipe ?

Idle the engine and have someone block off the tailpipe while you are under the hood or the front of the truck listening for exhaust leaks. As pressure builds up, they will get much louder and make a hissing noise.

Use a length of garden hose, (heater hose) placed to your ear and pass hose along exhaust, leak will be easy to pin point.
