Trouble with DeWalt torpedo heater

I have a DeWalt DXH190HD torpedo heater that I can not get to burn correctly. It burns fine with the cover off, but when I put the cover back on, it “surges”. The flame goes out and back on. If I restrict the air on the back of the heater, it runs slightly better. My air pressure is close to correct. (My gauge is bouncy). I’m thinking that I must not be getting enough fuel or too much air. I can’t turn down the air. The fuel filter is clean, I have replaced all the air and fuel lines, and cleaned the nozzle. The pump is clean and the veins move freely as they should. I have two other heaters that I have worked on and I got them to run good but this thing has got me pulling out my hair! Any ideas would be appreciated.

It seems that you are on the correct track regarding diagnosis - air/fuel mixture. I wonder if the nozzle is faulty even though you cleaned it? Probably not a factor, but does the fuel tank cap breathe correctly? Try running it with the cap loose. The fuel tank is clean, correct fresh fuel with no water/gunk?

Let us know the outcome.

I put the fuel line directly into a clean jar and have tried #1 diesel and straight kerosene. It appears that the fuel is atomizing well but I am starting to question the nozzle as well. It is so confusing making sure that you get the correct new nozzle online. 🤔

Thanks for the video. It is one of the better and more informational videos I’ve seen. Unfortunately, I don’t think that is my problem since mine runs good with the cover off or the air restricted at the back of the heater. I will definitely be double checking mine though.
