How good is Trop Artic? I've just started using Havoline 5w30 dino in a '99 Accord, OCI 5K with filter change and today I saw quarts of Trop Artic for significantly less than Havoline. If it's the same quality as the Havo I'll get some.

Also is there any reason why I shouldn't change brands, assuming that the quality is pretty much the same at each oil change? For example, brand A is $1 a qt. one month whereas the following month brand B is $1 a qt. and brand A is $1.30 a qt.

I recently switched from M1 to TropArtic in my '96 Cavalier 2.2L in an effort to halt its oil-burning ways. The consumption went down a bit, but it still uses oil. The engine does run much quieter with the TropArtic. I like it OK so far. I haven't decided if I will stick with it long term. I may do an UOA to help me decide.

I just purchased the 10 quarts from WallyWorld at $1.38/quart.

I think JK is right...Good cheap oil!

I have 27 quarts in my stash, purchased for $1.00 a piece at Dollar Tree. Dollar Tree seems to be out, but Wally World has Trop-Arctic for $1.48 - still a reasonable price. There are a few UOAs out there that are good. Also look at the UOAs from Motorcraft semi-synthetic, which is also made by Phillips Cononco and is virtually identical.

Dollar Tree used to sell oil until a couple of months ago. I checked my local one in DeKalb, IL and they have nothing. Bummer. One dollar semi-synthetic was quite a deal. You may want to check big lots. When I last checked (about a month ago), they had Pennzoil semi-synthetic for $1.79 a quart, which is not bad.

Great oil for the price from Conoco-Phillips. Note that synthetic blend (only in 5W-20,5w30, and 10w30) is the oil that you want in case you happen to come across old stock. Conoco-Phillips sells the same oil under different names such as Kendall GT-1, Conoco Super All Season, Motorcraft, and even 76 Super. Some of you folks might have better luck finding one of these locally.

Big Lots sometimes have new Kendall GT-1 synthetic blend 5w30 and 10w30 for $1.59, but stock is spotty and can vary from store to store. Autozone carries Kendall as well, but only 10w30 for $1.79 . Alco/Duckwall stores some to carry Trop-Artic here in W. Ohio, but no 5W-20.

Locally I can only find Trop-Artic and Motorcraft, with MC costing at least $.50 more a quart and only MC being available in 5W-20 and 15w40.

Here in Ohio there are no Kragens/Shucks/Checker stores, but we do have their sister store Advance Auto Parts (all are part of Parts America). Never any good sales on oil or air/oil filters. At best $.25/qt off of Wal Mart everyday prices. Just matched Meijer's normal $5 price ($4 sale every month or two) for Pure One filters before Meijer went to the Orange wall of death (with no sales).

No Phillips 66 stations around here ucandoit, and Trop-Artic only just showed up here in Ohio this year. The Dollar Tree started carrying Trop-Artic around March and stopped carrying it in August due to price increases. Wal Mart just added it here back in late summer, but MC has been around for a few years.

At my Dollar Tree they don't have TropArtic, but they now have 5w30, 10w30 and 10w40 STP GF4/SM rated oils for $1.49

I guess its about the same quality as Walmart's SuperTech.

The Dollar Tree Oil (of which I have quite a stockpile is SM and is labelled as a blend. The Trop Artic at Wally World is SL and no mention of syn blend or semi syn on the label. Is the Wally World stuff as good?

Look at ddean's post, the synthetic blend is the oil to get. It was this oil that my original post was asking about. My local Wally World has the Trop Artic SM synthetic blend for $1.38 qt., Havoline at $1.88 qt., Motorcraft at $1.94 qt. and Pennzoil/Valvoline/Castrol/Quaker State at $2.04 qt.

Did Supreme went up? What you meant was before rebate..if you use the in store CSK flyer coupon.

In our local papers, the Kragens flyer still has the Chevron oil coupon at $0.49..after rebate.

Motorcraft, Trop Artic & Kendall are closely related. Murrays has the Kendall syn-blend on sale for $1.29 after rebate. I just bought a case of 12 at $20.28 -- final cost $15.48 after rebate.
