Transmission - to flush or not to flush

Yes, only one bucket is used as none of the lines is a suction line

Most people don't know that just draining a transmission only replaces the fluid in the pan typically around 4-5 quarts. You should always do a flush of the system to remove the remaining 5 or so quarts that doesn't drain from the torque converter and the rest of the system.

I don't know your vehicle so it may be different and may even have a drain plug for draining or flushing, as some do, but most do not.

If the vehicle is started early with drain and fills every 30,000 miles, then there is no need for a full flush removing all the fluid from the system.

My system will remove 7 quarts from a pan drop of the 11 ish quarts in the system.

Even if the system is dirty and only doing a partial drain and fill the system still benefits from the refresh in additive package and contaimination removal.

I don't think I'd ever do a transmission flush. However I've done fluid EXCHANGES, and a pan drop, new filter and fluid then a fluid exchange. As well as a pan drop and new filter and refill, without a fluid exchange. The transmission fluid is serviced every ~25-30,000 miles. At the last transmission service my indie mechanic said after he dropped the pan the fluid was so clean he only replaced the filter, since the pan was dropped anyway, and pan fluid. The 2005 Explorer now has 160,000 miles and was purchased new. So we started with a clean transmission and kept it that way.
