Transmission plug sealer?

I had a friend weld a B and M drain plug kit onto a NOS pan for me to install on my next fluid drain. I bought some cheap $1 fluid to test it and it leaked.. even with the fluid being cold. Not too sure if the weld warped the plug kit or if its just expected to have to add a sealer to the threads. What would you guys recommend? Pipe tape? Heck I don't even know what I should torque the tapered plug at.

Or is it not even worth adding the pan with plug because of the fear of it leaking and losing fluid? It has me second guessing myself. 1 mess every 30,000 miles seems slightly cheaper than a transmission.

PTFE tape on the threads should do it

Is it leaking from the threads or around the part that is welded? Did he just tack the nut to the inside of the pan?
Thread tape is fine for thread leakage.

Are the threads NPT or normal threads like a bolt?

If they are NPT then teflon tape. If normal threads sounds like it needs a gasket.

+1. All the drain plugs on the ATs I've seen have a metal gasket.

Not too sure what NPT is but they appear to be like a bolts threads.

The weld is defiantly not leaking. It was welded 360 degrees around the drain hole.

That kit just requires a hole drilled in the pan.

The kit was bolted to the pan then it was welded to the pan 360 degrees around the outside. Basically the weld more or less replaces the nylon washer.

*After reading the link, it looks like these plug kits have been welded on before.

What about the plug you unscrew to drain the fluid. Is it NPT or normal thread with a gasket?

I assume its normal thread and either your gasket is not working properly or missing.

Its just a tapered bolt. No gasket.

I used almost the same kit on the 3500. I wrapped teflon tape around the center bolt to keep it from leaking. It was a pain but hasn't leaked since.

Do you remember what you torqued it at?

Don't have a torque wrench so I use the German method of tightening bolts. It's fairly tight though.
