Transmission jack brand, features recommendations

Hi All,

My dad had a transmission jack somewhere but it's buried in storage for the time being. I need suggestions from people with experience that can recommend any brands or options. It would be for removing the transmission in my 2005 Dodge Neon. Unfortunately rebuilders want $1700-$2100 for a rebuild transmission for my neon which is why I likely see so many at pull n pay. The rebuild kit is $180-$250ish. Not sure what brands are good/stay away from. The pump died so I'm not sure if the kit will include parts for that. Pull n pay is $249 flat rate for transmissions but several hours of pulling doesn't mean it's any better. All suggestions welcome.
 
I was doing some tranmission work on one of my cars that required me to pull the it out of the car and nobody rented a transmission jack in my area. They pop up in the classifieds every now and then, but I didn't come across a decent one when I needed it. I ended buying a Princess Auto (similar to Harbour Freight) unit on sale. It works well and was cheap. The only thing I don't like about it is that it is pretty high to lift the transmission onto the jack at its lowest height, which can make it a two-man job for large, heavy RWD transmissions like I was working on.

Are you still around Denver? I never knew there was a Nunn, CO but looks like the land of good odors from feed lots (edit: seriously, I like beef)

This one is listed there as a SnapOn. It's a trip because I'm assuming you pump that dual handle.

They're asking $275. No affiliation

Cool thanks for the heads up. I've lived here since 1991 and still have to look up towns that I've never heard of. Theres a Rifle and Gunbarrel Colorado. Hygiene was named due to a tuberculosis sanitarium located there. Julesburg was named after a well known stage coach robber. Of all of the people that they could have named the town after.

I bought mine off Craigslist over 10 years ago. It’s an 80s jack made in the USA. It was $200, which I felt was excessive, but there weren’t many for sale and new ones weren’t appealing. Type in transmission jack in Amazon and you get a bunch of no-name jacks with not that many ratings.

I thought I only needed to use it once to change my clutch, turned out I needed to use it again to replace another bad clutch in another car.

It’s so much better to own one of these, because unless you’re some kind of expert, you’ll need the jack for more than one day (rental fees add up)

If I were you, I’d get something like this JEGS. I have a JEGS standard Jack. Used it for 10 years without issue. It’s made in Taiwan.

The only transmission jack that I've found that works is a vintage Ajax jack (good luck finding one). Simply because the screws are Acme threaded. It makes for easier lifting (no hydraulics), pitch and yaw adjustments. I have a HF jack, add the weight of the gearbox and the pitch/yaw adjustments suck because of the "standard" threaded screws.

The HF jack works, but I had to use a strap wrench on the knobs to adjust the yaw and pitch.
