Transmission Fluid added to Oil? 1:5 ratio

Today while at the my mechanic I asked him about my exhaust. It's better than it was but it still spews a light cloud on some accelerations and when first started.

He said that valve seals are probably leaking slightly. He suggested adding 1 quart of Transmission fluid to the oil to help clean the engine and soften the seals.

What are y'alls thoughts on ATF added to the Oil? I just did an oil and filter change after working on my oil cooler adapter. It's running 5 qts of 5w30 currently. Some other things I've been told may help is MMO, MOS2(which I couldn't find at my local AAP), and Seafoam.

Thoughts, opinions, advice?

Find a new mechanic.

ATF does not contain the essential additives needed for engine oil. It does contain additives that are not suitable for an engine. It does not recondition seals.

You might try Auto-Rx. If that does not work, replace the seals, or live with the minor oil consumption.

ATF shouldnt even be in a rebuilt engine for break in.Buts thats the long thought miracle cure for a successful break in.

It always amazes me how little car mechanics know about engine oil. And whatever they do know, is wrong.

Way back when, some ATFs contained real whale oil, an ester, which may have had some magical properties.
Modern ATF is just a low detergency light oil friction modified to suit the clutches in the slushboxes it's recommended for.
Do not add ATF to your motor oil and expect it to improve anything.

If you think it is the valve seals you could try a High Mileage oil or just buy a seal swell additive; GUNK makes one.

If you think you rings are gummed up then start using using a synthetic oil for a slow possible remedy or pull the plugs and soak the ring and piston crowns with a product like Seafoam.

Not only have I found it to be wrong, but they're VERY sure that their answers are gospel. Not all, mind you, but I've come across more than a few who were pretty extreme in their beliefs.

Could you give me a link?

Thanks, I'll check there.

Heh, he's a good guy and seemed confident in it. I wanted to see what y'alls thoughts were first though.

Can that be gotten at a local shop? The text on the site sounds kinda iffy.
I'm not sure how much oil is actually being consumed because I haven't driven it long enough since the Oil change. I don't think it's much. I'm just trying to lessen the exhaust I leave behind if I can.

Browsing AAP's website and found this Anyone ever tried Rislone?

Thanks for the replies, guys.

A lot of the ATF stuff is due to the fact that few people have any understanding of it whatsoever. Compared to a basic, intuitive idea about oil, ATF is a complete mystery - automatic transmissions run on witchcraft and superstition, and the fluid in them is some unfathomable essence. I would not be surprised to see people lighting candles in front of these things, or offering them fruit.

Offering them fruit is a bad idea. Most auto transmissions have a strong dislike for fruit in general and they may be angered by such an offer. Even if you have one that likes it, there's a possibility it will have a bad reaction and get sick or even die.

High mileage oil such as Valvoline Maxlife might reduce oil consumption. However, there is no way to be sure, and you might need a rebuilt cylinder head.

ATF does not have the additives to substitute engine oil in any quantity.

Back in the day, adding about 1 pint of transmission fluid was a 'fix' for sticking lifters, BUT you should drain and re-fill after a few hundred miles. Many mechanics used this technique. Ester is known to 'condition seals' read swell here. It's a short term 'fix' but it does work. Try high mileage oils they have specific seal conditioners that actually work.

Back in the day, engine oil was much thicker than ATF, which helped free engine parts up due to its low viscosity.
