Hello all,

I was after replacing my oil cooler, Yamaha FJ1100, and the prices are really high. Are transmission oil coolers an acceptable replacement? I understand the viscosity and flow through rate? would be different, but has it been done?

cheers, Gareth

Modern electronically controlled automatic transmission coolers will see surges up to 300psi.

Normal temp range should be 175-215F and 275F or so should be the max allowed and at this kind of temperature you should be doing something to get the heat back to normal. At 275F you're transmission won't last very long.

The temperature should be read at the outlet line at the converter that goes to the cooler, not at the cooler or at the return line.

Do these number help? You can convert convert Fahrenheit to Celsius.

All you need to know is the working pressure. Oil is oil, the cooler won't care about the type, just the peak pressures.

I have used the little flat plate coolers from GM in a variety of hot rods as they are very small and yet highly effective without a lot of back pressure. There are also tine power steering coolers that are quite small and may work well as I am sure space is a premium on the bike.

If you have a stock oil cooler there must be some sort of bypass for when the oil is thick. I'd go through the ones at any parts store; I bet you'd find one reasonably square-shaped.

The ones that snake back and forth, I don't see why you can't hacksaw them in half if needed for space and flare the pipe to keep your hose from blowing off.

Sorry, long days. I misread. Thought you wanted to use an automatic transmission cooler on an engine. Maybe it's a good time to give up crack, meth, coffee, alcohol, cigarettes and corn sweeteners.

Remember, nobody likes a quitter.,,,

Yes, a basic transmission cooler will work fine. Make sure the diameter is at least as large as the stock oil cooler. Most engines have a bypass built in to the oil system, usually just a large orifice that forces some of the oil through the cooler. If the cooler is restrictive, the oil is routed into the main system or possibly gets blow off by the relief valve.
