transmission cold whine - any ideas?

Hi,

91 BMW 318i with 95k. Fully maintained and runs great. Gets 27-29 MPG in mixed driving.

Problem is that when I first start it up after sitting more than a few hours, when I drive it for the first couple minutes, I get a whooo-wheee-whooo sound, seemingly coming from the transmission. Only seems to happen when first driving, and by the time Ive driven maybe half a mile, it is gone and will never come back until the car sits for hours. Seems to happen when decelerating.

Also, perhaps unrelated, regardless of temperature, when I roll slowly along, and press the clutch, and shift into 1st gear, I hear something spooling up. I assume this is the synchros doing their work. Is this normal? Is this a saign that theyre going bad?

I did have the center bearing replaced and the guibo changed. Do you think something was done wrong, or something not greased/lubed properly, causing this? It is more apparent in the cold weather. WHen its warm out, it still will occur, but not as much.

Transmission fluid is redline with only a few thousand miles. Its full.

Any ideas?

The noise you hear when shifting into first at a slow roll is the syncro speeding up the 1st gear constant mesh on the output shaft. Nothing to worry about.

H-m-m-m...
Never heard of a guibo. Guy-bo ? Ge-bo ?

I see it's a flex disc -- vibration damper on the driveline.

I think a friend used to design something like that for helicopters in Erie, PA.
