Transmission Cleaning

The vehicle isn't actually driven or shifted through gears while low on fluid, that in of itself wouldn't hurt the car.

Bad advice here. You want to cut the engine the second you see air. Running the trans dry will destroy the pump in a short time!

Ah, thank you. I was definitely in need of clarification there regarding the pump. I've never done it the way Hyundai suggests, and the risk of ruining the pump isn't worth it. Just keep adding fresh fluid up top while the return line collects in a container.

If the 1qt-2qt drain/shut off and refill works, it's still a good idea to pull the dipstick afterward while the engine is hot/level place to check for enough fluid. A slight overfill isn't bad, right?

Generally, it's about repeating the process until fresh fluid is coming out of the return line. So, I take it back, don't do it Hyundai's way!

And be cautious about any overfill or underfill. Modern Trans have funny attitudes about fluid levels.

Git 'er done, but git it right!

I personally find that many transmission pumps force the fluid out faster then it can be poured in.
Example - my trans pan holds 4 quarts of fluid - I pump out 2 quarts at a time/stop engine - pour in 2 quarts - and repeat until I have poured/drained 8-9 quarts of ATF = +95% new fluid in the trans in about 30 mins at home.

Tip - Get a helper to turn the engine off/on - you can watch the jugs and refill the trans.

Cheers.

Exactly. Or if you have a MAP sensor just pull the plug.
