Don't worry. Better protection.
IMO, mechanical xcases aren't too picky.
I'd skip the ATF and stick with gear oil or a manual tranny fluid.
 
whoops! you are right i meant to say my '90 v-6 toyota sorry to mislead, thanks for your response. you a right the montero calls for a gl-4 gear lube.
 
If the transfer case calls for ATF, use it. If the transfer case calls for gear lube, use it. Don't use what it doesn't call for.

Some full time/AWD-type/4WD on demand transfer cases are very sophisticated with differentials, clutch packs and solenoids and using the wrong lube is a easy way to destroy your transfer case.
