I have a 2006 silverado half ton with the 4l60e I believe. I dropped the pan about 30,000 miles ago and replace the filter and put in valvoline dex 6. This truck has only the trans cooler in the radiator core and I want to put an external one on but it seems like a lot to do. Will the trans be fine if I don't have one on? And I can't seem to find out which line (top/bottom) on the radiator is the feed to do a flush on it. Be advised I don't tow often and is a daily driver some stop and go traffic.

I am not sure you need an external cooler. I would go with a synthetic ATF it will better handle higher temps. I use Amsoil ATF it may be spec'ed for your truck.

Drive your truck for 15-20 minutes and feel both cooler lines. The cooler one is the return. Or use a IR point-at thermometer. Good time to install a Magnefine inline filter.

The flush is easier than you think.

Do you work that truck hard & heavy? If not, there is probably no reason to add extra cooling. The in line filter and regular fluid drains & refills are smart.

The hardest thing the truck sees on a regular basis is stop and go traffic. I rarely tow much. And yeah I was just wondering if its hard to do a flush on it wit the cooler lines. It's due for a pan drop.

My take on this subject has always been that if a transmission is serviced from new at intervals appropriate for its use, then a flush shouldn't be necessary. If, however, the vehicle has an unknown maintenance history then a complete fluid exchange is a good idea once, with regular drain & fills thereafter.

My niece has an '06 Fusion she bought with 26,000 miles. I did 2 back-to-back drain & fills at 30,000 and again at 60,000. The ATF still looks new.

A cooler line flush is easier than you think. If you drop the pan, refill it, but do not start the engine, instead go right into a cooler line flush. More ATF will get mixed if you start it before you are setup for the flush.

An external or inline filter is always a good idea. Will avoid pan drops in the future.
