Transmission shops don't want to change fluid on a transmission that wasn't mainained because they might be blamed for future failure. In addition people that change their fluid at high mileage sometimes do it because they are already having problems.
I say change the fluid ASAP and change it again after a short period of time if it is really bad.
I bought my Lesabre with 210,000 miles. The fluid was two quarts low and black, not brown. I changed the fluid twice two get it all(better then a flush) and flushed the cooler, then used AutoRX and changed it twice again. I think I've changed it once since then with DEXRON IV. It now has 311k on it(it even outlasted the car) and is still working.(fingers crossed)
Clean fluid when changed properly will not a kill a transmission, but neglect can.
