tranny fluid in a Honda

Good to know other folks have good luck with fluids other than Z1. The fluid is burnt at 19k miles on my fiancee's 09 Fit Sport. I'm changing it with Z1 this time since she's leery of the warranty. 60k fluid changes my kiester!

Sorry to hear that. ~140k on an 01 Civic using Z-1 with 3 Z-1 drain and fills (time for another) since new, with no issues. (knock wood) 01 Civic noted for transmission issues.

IMO, you are wise to at least stay with Z-1 until out of warranty.

Hmmm...that's not right.

She's a very, ahem, spirited driver. Lots of hard starts and lots of gear changes that little transmission has to do. That's why it's brownish red at 19k miles.

Yeah, very spirited!

Does the fluid smell burnt??

I have an 07 Fit Sport and changed the fluid at 25K with Z-1 and it looked fine. The drain plug magnet had a little crud and nothing unusual. I did a second D/F the other day @ 50K and replaced the filter as well, again very little on the magnet. And of course I cut open the filter and examined the media, rubbed it with tissue paper and again no grey sludge or metal particles. Since I am almost out of warranty I will consider using other fluids even M1 and extend the filter change to 100K. The fluid was not cherry red ,a little off color, I did the paper towel test before changing and it looked fine. I am leaning towards a 50K interval in the future!

My TL was the same way at about the same mileage. Z1 was black and smelled. I installed
Amsoil and never looked back. 90,000 miles later it shifts better than new.

It sorta smells. It doesn't smell like ATF. There was a bit of particulate in it, at least on the paper towel I rubbed the dipstick on.

Back again.

After 40k (at 47k) on AMSoil, my drainplug had MINIMAL residue on it. The MaxLife shifts are pretty fast and crisp.

All fluids loose their FM qualities over time.

I do like the 1x a year or every other year method. If you are behind on your service, or get a used vehicle, sure do as many D&F as you like. For the guys who use expensive ATFs, on an old under serviced vehicles, I suggest a few changes of cheap ATF (generic ATF+4 or Dex VI) and then settle on your premium fluid.

I don't see the benefit of more than 2 D&F in a clean unit (75% concentration) . Wait and do the subsequent service in a year.

Also, although the extractor is a great tool, the Honda ATF is SO easy to service. The nice thing there is that exactly 3q comes out, 3q goes in, almost no need to measure. Just be sure to have a level surface because it will affect the level. Mostly, less than 3q will not come out, and if you put 3 back in you have an overfill. Just get down there with a 3/8" ratchet with an extension. It is tough to break that bolt the first time, but just don't over tighten and later it's easier than an engine oil change. I slipped a piece of warm 3/4" PVC over my ratchet for an extension.
