Hey y'all,

My 1999 Camaro V6 is really starting to show her age. She's got nearly 171k on the clock, and I've had to spend about 800.00 on her in the last couple of weeks (replaced transmission with low mileage salvage unit, tune-up, oil change, etc.) As of right now, it probably needs another 800 spent on it, between the rear pads and rotors which are worn slam out, the worn out tires, the turn signal which quit, and oh yeah, the service engine light came on this morning. I've got a chance to trade it in on a 2000 Silverado Z71 extended cab with appx. 150k on it, and be allowed around 3k for the camaro, and end up owing another 3. My question is, do y'all think I should keep the camaro (which, other than the mentioned problems, seems to run and drive well), or trade for the silverado?

Thanks

Can't buy a car for $800, and you know the history too!

Whats the body like?

Whatever you do, I wouldn't do the trade. You're going to spend $3k MORE for a truck that is ONLY 1 year newer, and has 20k less miles on it?

A 9-year-old Silverado w/150k miles on it is NOT worth $6k to begin with! Whoever is offering this is taking you for a sucker, IMO.

Having replaced the tranny, which is a big-buck expense, I'd say keep it. Yeah, you may have to spend more money on it, but it is just routine maintenance stuff at this point. $1600 overall is a lot less than $6k on a truck that still may need more work soon.

+1 to addyguy.

It is not a compelling trade, and youll likely do far worse in fuel - $3k and the fuel savings can buy you plenty of repairs on your current vehicle. The only reason to get rid of your current vehicle is if it is rusting bad.

Well, the body's fairly straight, although the previous owner hit a deer with it, and the repair wasn't exactly the best in the world, but it still looks okay. Interior's pretty good too, but I suppose I'm just tired of the car, and the hassles. As far as the Silverado goes, in this area they hold they're value extremely well. It's practically impossible to find a GMT800 4WD for less than 6k, and in most cases, the one you do come across that are under that usually are pushing 200k miles.

If you really want a truck, might be worth 'wandering' to an area where they aren't quite so expensive...

Well, I've looked on ebay and whatnot, but as far as I can see, in order to buy a truck like I'd want in order to replace the camaro (Namely, a Silverado Extended Cab 4 Wheel Drive, preferably with the Z71 package), I'm going to have to spend at least 5k whereever I go. But I could be wrong...

I think you will find maintaining and driving your camaro much cheaper that a high mileage 4x4 truck...
Basically you are driving two camaros(camari?) drivetrains sharing one engine.
Unless you need 4wd its kind of expensive, costs 5% at the pump everytime and maybe alot more at the garage...

I parted with a car at roughly the same miles (175K). But it needed a new transmission and needed the heads rebuilt. I wouldn't part with a car just because it needs pads, rotors and tires.

It's a different matter you're bored with the car. These things are personal decisions.

Well, after giving it a little more thought, I realized that I'd probably be better off to just fix up the Camaro. It has some other issues that I didn't mention on here, like a minor oil leak, but I still figure that I'm better off fixing what I've got than buying somebody else's problems. I'd still love to have a truck like I mentioned, but I do already have a Tahoe, which is for all wants and purposes serves the same purpose.

Thanks for all the Responses.

Fix the known vehicle. Brakes are an easy 1 day job. Then get the car detailed for $200 so it looks nice. Try some maxlife oil on the leak...go on tire rack & ebay for new tires. You should be able to bring that thing back to complete new life for $1,000 and you are $2k ahead of the note on the truck.
