I've had pretty decent experience with TSC over the years. They have expanded in the SE PA and Southern NJ areas over the past 5 years or so. But lately, my experience with them has been flat out disappointing.
The first instance was back in March or so when I ordered a gun locker for ship to local store. The tracking info showed it at a depot down the road and then delivered to the store...that was 2 weeks after I ordered it. I was never notified but that was confirmed when I called customer service. Apparently, it was delivered to the store but they couldn't find it. I cancelled the order and got one from Amazon a week later.
Yesterday, I wanted to buy a pack of Demon WP insecticide. It's really effective stuff for getting rid of wasps/yellow jackets, etc...
Two local stores had it in stock according to their website...about 15 units per store.
Loaded the dogs into the car and off to Toughkenamon...the manager checked the inventory and tried to locate it in three different places... nothing. After a few apologies it was off to the Oxford store...12-15 miles South. Same story, different store. I left empty handed and ordered it from Amazon in the car and it's out for delivery this AM.
I also noticed they started selling ammunition...of all sorts, rifle, pistol, shotgun. Prices were somewhat ridiculous. .22/$5/ box of 50. 9mm=$32./box of 50. My guess is they're trying to capture what used to be Walmarts market for it. The displays in both stores were full so I'm guessing folks aren't buying.
Both stores seemed disheveled and disorganized but no shortage of staff.
I'm starting to have my doubts about TSC.

At my Tractor Supply, they quit carrying Case knives and took down their display. Now the only knives they carry that I can see are cheap Chinese knives. But ours is clean and neat and well stocked.

They're expanding too fast?
Perhaps relying on a "well developed" computerized inventory + tracking system THEN hiring limited people to run the ship?
I think you've nailed part of the problem. In the one store, there was an empty one of those "clip hanger" displays that was where the product I was looking for had been displayed. The employee mentioned that perhaps the supplier had mistakenly listed the 25 units as available...so something between inventory and POS is out of whack...and it's not theft...no ones coming there to steal than stuff.

I've always had good results, however they are one of the few places that carries Jealous Devil lump charcoal, and fire starters.

Something just changed with their shipping. Used to be a store employee delivered our TSC orders. Recently it was a huge headache and we had to make a lot of phone calls to see what happened to our order.

Seems they're using a shipping company now. They sent a gal in her 40's to deliver a 2000lb order. That never happened before.

Rack it up to another example of the "ebbs and flows" of life. Get used to it, or not. I wonder if this (change) has always been this way or is it something old people "yell at the clouds" about. I remember when TSC content started degrading to more imported products. I remember the hours spent in the Sears tool aisles................... When NAPA was the pillar of top notch parts and service...................sigh.

TSC has good pricing on decent quality dog and cat food if you have the need for big bags of it. Most pet foods for that matter is priced well there.

They certainly have their issues. I went into my local store this past Sunday and on the way in there was a lady with her dog. The dog had relieved himself right in the doorway and the lady was trying to wipe it up. I thought that certainly someone would lend a hand but... nope.

I went back in the store on Tuesday and the smeared feces was still on the floor. I will receive a survey about my most recent purchase and I intend to mention this. My local store is absolutely horrible. They had drilled it into everybody's head to say hello when you walk through the door but that's as far as they have gotten with customer service or business management.

We had one open in town a few years ago but it's as weirdly small one. They stock the dog food we use and it's convenient for buying bolts on a weekend, or fuel line, etc.

I always check clearance. Have got a few good things from them.

Also I fully blame them for my old house flooding.

My local TSC stores (the one in Riviera Beach and Indiantown, FL) charge more than the posted price on many items. I have to be very careful with them.

No question the stores carry what I need, but their prices are already high, and to have them add $5 more to a product is just plain old evil.

I never went in there until I bought a tractor.. After that I found myself in there on a fairly regular basis buying random clips/pins/bushings for 3pt attachements. They were also cheaper for deer corn, but Academy is cheaper per bag now. My kids like going to see the chicks.

One pet-peeve is their rewards program (Neighbor's Club) was always bad and then went to worse. The last thing I got was $2 off AND it was only good for ~2 weeks. To me if you've truly "earned" a loyalty reward it should stay on your account for at least a year.

Plus there's always two of me in their register -- one as "loyalty customer" and one as something else. For ~10 years the employees NEVER know which to select, ie there is zero training.

I know this sounds petty but really it's the annoyance of seeing them pretend they have a program when in reality it's effectively smoke and mirrors. Don't bother signing up.

Beyond that OP's experience is why I try to order everything to my door. People bemoan the loss of B&M but it's inevitable as I see it.
