Tractor Fluid comparison

I think I'm a candidate for oil analyzers anonymous. Just can't help myself.

I've run virgin analysis on two
Universal Tractor Hydraulic/Transmission fluids ( THF). Here are the results.

The first entry is Schaeffer's product #115 and the second is John Deere Low Viscosity Hy-Trans fluid.
Lead = 0,1
Tin = 0,1
Iron = 1,1
Alum = 1,1
Silicon = 5,3
Moly = 2,1
Sodium = 2,1
Magnesium = 8,78
Zinc = 1010,1050
Phos. = 895,895
Cal = 2420,3020

Large Particle Count in microns:
Greater than 5 = 6752, 0
Greater than 10 = 1545, 0
Greater than 15 = 135, 0
Greater than 20 = 33, 0
Greater than 25 = 26, 0
Greater than 50 = 15, 0
Greater than 75 = 9, 0
Greater than 100 = 5, 0
IsoCode 20/14, not given on JD oil

All test are by Holt Cat in Dallas.

I can't tell if one is better than the other. However, I can see Schaeffer's needs to micron filter its oil at bottling.

wow, im no hydraulic expert i dont even know much about hydraulics but thats some dirty oil!

are you sure its not used oil you sent in by accident?

A lot has to do with the size of the additive particles and type of additive, whether soluble or suspended.

If the particles were all sand or dirt, the silicon should be sky high.

Thanks. I did not think that if the particles were true dirt they would show as silicon. I believe that foaming is a problem with hydro and splash lubed gear sets. So the silicon that is in both oils may just be mostly antifoam additives.

What an education. Did not even have to pass Chem 101 to get the benefits.
 
they do filter the hyd to meet certain iso standards...

Here are the additives of some that I've run (graphed on my site)
In order they are: Chevron (USA), American Pet (USA), Esso Arg., Repsol (Arg), PDV (Ven), Pennzoil (Bolivia), John Deere (Brazil)
Calcium: 3500, 3500, 2800, 1866, 1979, 465, 3300
Phosforo: 1230, 1230, 1180, 1207, 1033, 1028, 1220
Zinc: 1340, 1340, 1300, 1362, 1269, 1198, 1370
The rest of the values are back in my office.
No, the Pennzoil number is not a typo. It also correlates with terrible performance in the field. I doubt that Pennzoil USA would be anywhere near that bad (or cheap)
 
It's mostly the calcium.

Now some additives (such as VII's) come from the additive supplier in a "solid cake" form.

At the blender, one usually grinds it up and adds it to the final blend.

I can gurantee you that this has no bearing on the quality of the finished product, since when the oil gets hot, it will dissolve.

The silicon (2-4 ppm) IS antifoamant.
 
Are these fluids the same (or similar) as Honda HST (hydrostatic transmission) fluid?

I bought some a month ago and it is crystal clear ... like baby oil.

The John Deere Hy-Gard is red and the Schaeffers is a light amber.

After using the Schaeffer's for 50 hours and in some very hot weather. I'm getting less gear whine than I got from the JD Hy-Gard Low Vis.

I expect that this is due to the Schaeffer's being is a bit more viscus than the JD stuff.
 
Hmmm ... perhaps I should back up a bit.

Is hydraulic fluid usually used in most hydrostatic transmissions? I know applications vary, but are they EVER interchangeable?

I wish I knew this before I bought the Honda stuff ... and could be sure it was 100% compatible.

I wish Honda was more open about the specs of their lubes. Their proprietary game is a real pain.

You might call Schaeffer's and see if they know for sure.

BTW, the correct number was #254 and not what I had posted.

The #254 comes in various viscosities and I was looking at the ISO 46 or ISO 68 as a "possible" replacement for the Honda HS oil.

I find it hard to believe that any fluid has all zero particle count. I do not believe that any count was taken of the JD stuff. If it had low count, OK. All zeros?...not likely.

I think that the lower noise level of your machinery with the Schaeffer's all-petro tractor hydraulic oil is due to a better additive package or better base oils (and at slightly higher price offset by longer oil life). The #115 will have a higher viscosity index than the JD, so it won't thin as much when hot, also.

No particle count on the John Deere Low Vis. I was using the zeros as place holders.

Now I know the Schaeffer's particle count was not dirt since it did not show a large silicon presence.
 
Regarding the 'not dirt since no silicon indicated' is incorrect. The spectro only looks at particles 5 microns or smaller. The particle count could well be indicating dirt or other contaminants.. However, it is impossible for the JD to register 0 on the particle counts; something is wrong here.... Need a re-run..
