Toyota Tacoma sales crater YoY Q1 2024

I don't mind my 2023 Tacoma. It just has to have the Bajesus wound out of it, then it moves fine. So does a base 3.3 NA F150, 3.6 Ram. Anyone that says that's not true is lieing to themselves about the RAM and F150. They are sloooow until about 4500rpm, after that they start to accelerate. The same with the Tacoma.
I have a crew cab ultra short box 4x4 Sport trim, 3.5 with a 6spd manual. Out the door it was $40,300. It was paid for before I walked out the door.
I'd have no problem problem with a 4th gen tacoma as long as it was a 4wd with a manual. I see them for low $40k's before taxes. I worked for $5k off and got it. Any joker that pays sticker or over deserves it. You can get one out the door for less than $41k, just have to talk...uuumm.. sweet and be willing to walk and play dealers against each other.
The dealer in Waco wanted msrp +$2500 for 4wd and +$3500 for the manual transmission because everyone wants them...lol I hung up on that fool.

Get a tune, and get it re-geared to 4.88. Makes a huge difference.

My 2019 MT still going strong!!

Yes, I have KD Max 8.0 Pro tune on it. How big are the tires on your truck? I may go one size taller and skinnier with a 255/70r17. I don't want to lift or anything.
E lockers would be cool but it does fine. I've lifted tires and the TRAC system pulls it right through. I just use 1st and 4 low and keep the rpms about 1500rpms and the TRAC light blinks and it never stops moving.
4.88s? That's got to be 3,000rpms at 70mph.
All my driving is 70-75mph hwy.

I think my K02 tires are around 31.5" OD.
I have the torque OVT from way back in the day, don't want to mess with it I like it so much. I don't know anything about how the KD Max compares

I rarely drive 70 but it's not 3000rpm. That said I have a lot of grunt through the gears. 60-65 mph mostly when I can speed on back roads and that's 2200-2300 RPM

It's just a few dealers gouging. I can get a 4th gen equivalent to mine for less than $42000 drive home price. That's $1,700 more than I paid. The $50k-60k Sport/OR is a joke. The dealers pray on the weak minded and impulsive. I saw a dealer Advertisement for a Toyota Camry for $62,000 because of a $22000 "market adjustment"....last of the V6 ones too. That was in 2022. They are probably still trying to sell it..lol

The 4 cylinder is fine. Ford proved that with the current generation Ranger. If it's got torque down low, who cares how many cylinders it has. Torque down low makes a pleasant driver. I absolutely don't by that people are turned off the 4 th gen because it's 4 cylinder only. I believe people aren't buying them because dealers are asking too much. They will be like Dodges and Fords soon if the dealers don't wake up
DODGE trucks are $14k off sticker. Same with Ford. Toyota will be doing that soon or selling 2024 "new" Tacomas in October 2025... it can sticker at $70k for all I care, just give me $35,000 OFF sticker. The dealers act like they are being a sweetheart. Lol, no, I'm just going to get it for what is should be selling for in the first place.
It is "suggested retail" not set in stone.

They say otherwise on TW. This guy said they were almost begging him to take it. Not a $60,000 Tacoma either. It was like his 3rd gen for a few more dollars, just like I said. The 4th gen is a bit more expensive, not much...heck the price of eggs have risen faster. I'm boycotting chickens. Lol

If they are cratering, how can local dealers not keep them on the lots? I have seen 1. Combine this with the Tacoma being expensive and im sure generation change isn’t helping either. Base-ish for $45k or a loaded Frontier for 42k. There is no value with them.

I’m surprised the Tundra is up in sales seeing how they apparently have the engine issues.

I always thought the GMC/Chevrolet brand of truck should be in the same category and rated as the #1 seller. The Tacoma's are fairly expensive and that may be part of the reason for slower sales plus the gas mileage isn't really that great compared to a "real" truck. I liked them however consider them a little small to tow my boat. The dependability is awesome and I believe they are very well built and the body style is better than average.

Mid size trucks have always sold a fraction of the volume of full size. I think historically they have been the choice for price conscious buyers that really only needed a truck for light duty things ie people buy because they want not need. I paid I think $23,500 after all the rebates for the 2011 Nissan 4x4 in my sig. there 40k now.

I think the high prices and high interest rates are stifling sales. Most stark in the Tacoma but no brand is flying off the lot.

FWIW I think the new taco fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch. Wouldn’t stop me from buying one but if I were buying for looks I would take any of the other 3.

dlundblad,
$45,000 before taxes is a mid to mid-upper trim level Tacoma before haggling. Mine stickered just over $40k. I was $40,300 otd. During times they were "adding" to sticker. Mine is one up from a base model
I do see your point...but a Nissan? They've always been noisy and crude ecoboxes with little beds. The Taco has a better turning radius, a better 4wd traction system, a manual transmission, better resale and more aftermarket support. A Nissan...well is a Nissan aka the Japanese Chrysler...mediocre but cheaper than the competition.
Compare it to an XLT Ranger if you want but not Nissan. Granted the Ranger is automatic only.

Fanboi comment.

Frontiers are better than comparable gen Taco’s in every way mechanically. Last gen Taco didn’t have enough horsepower to get out of its own way. Haven’t driven the new 4. Hope it’s better

I do like the Rangers too.

He got a pretty basic SR5, honestly. Mine stickered for $46 and some change, but got it for around $44. However mine has the option package that has some nice features I feel I can't live without now. Nobody is doing market adjustment around here and discounts are popular, even on some Sport and OR trims.

Having owned a couple 3rd gens with the V6 this new turbo 4 is what the truck needed. Plenty of power and I always get better than EPA fuel mileage.

If the Nissan has any sort of Locker/,Suedo LSD in the rear AND front, I missed it. Last I read, they were open front differential...
The Tacoma has better resale value.
The Tacoma has WAY better aftermarket support.
The Taco has a manual transmission available.
The Tacoma can actually u turn inside a city block.
The Tacoma in 4wd trim will go places, with its front suedo LSD that the Nissan drivers just will not go.
At less than 8sec 0-60mph and a 16 second 1/4, it's quick enough. If I want a faster offroader I'd get a TRX.

I have a love/hate relationship with my 2019 Tacoma. It’s very capable off road, but the drivetrain is horrible. I have 4.88s and several tunes. Nothing fixes it. It just doesn’t have enough power or gears.

Highway driving (esp at altitude): truck starts slowing down. Press pedal. Downshift. High revs. Speed up. Now too fast. Ease off. Upshift. Now underpowered. Truck slows down. Repeat.

If the fourth gen weren’t so problematic I would trade it.

I have 4.88s and 255/80R17s and I run about 2000 rpm at 70.

Give it a year or two. Honestly the issues are so sporadic right now it's hard to track down the most common failures yet. Current trends are the 8 speed automatic taking a dump. Mine has been shifting odd occasionally so we'll see. They seem to get locked out of 1-5 gears and can limp home in 6-8.
