Wow, this post is off topic, but I have to disagree. The advantages include the fact that these are high-quality synthetic fluids with better high and low temperature properties than OEM that meets the requirements of the vehicle. Besides which, having more choices is always in the best interest of the consumer and is the reason we are not paying far more for the fluids than we are.

Again, while you may satisfy the low and high temperature properties with higher quality base oils, you still do not have the optimal frictional properties for each individual application with a multi-vehicle product.
 
I would be interested in seeing proof of this, since these manufacturer's have stated the opposite and are willing to back their products with warranties.

The info is in the SAE paper. The paper tested the frictional properties of various approved service fills from different vehicle manufacturers. The results are plotted in a graph, and you can see that the fluids behave very differently in a single test.

I had half factory T-IV and half Amsoil in my mom's Solara, and it worked well. Too bad some drunk crashed into and totaled that car.

Just what do you expect from these authors? Maybe they should apply at XOM/Valvoline/SOPUS for jobs and tell them they're FOS in producing the multivehicle formulas.

Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF is a multi-vehicle, fully synthetic fluid designed to meet the demanding requirements of modern passenger vehicles.

It used to carry Dexron-III(H) and Mercon-V approvals. It was actually approved for certain specifications.

In addition, it isn't a multi-vehicle/universal product in the same way that Amsoil is.
 
So? I'm still waiting for you to figure out that two GM authors, when writing a SAE paper for publication ..are going to have an agenda that serves GM included in their works

Well, I'm not gonna buy the paper just to read what you summarized here. I still don't see where that proves anything. You act as though there is one particular point that the fluid has to be at. In truth, there is a range of acceptable values for frictional characteristics and viscocities. Even a given fluid fill will exhibit a range of these over the course of its life. If you were to formulate just the right fluid, it would no longer be just right 5k miles later than when you put it in. Does the fluid still do the job? Of course. It is no different than oil in that respect. Different formulators are targeting different aspects of the fluid's performance for a given price point.
