Toyota Pink

My Lord ! ! ! The dealer wants $25/gal. for this stuff. I'am unemployed and every dollar counts. I only need to do a simple drain and refill - no flush needed as the system is squeaky clean. There has to be a cheaper fluid that is compatable with the pink.

you can use a hybrid hoat coolany which translates to zerex g-05 yellow coolant . see article for details.

I use Preston T-Flush to flush out the OEM coolant in '94 LS400 in around '97-'98, use Preston All-Makes All-Models and flush every 3 years. Preston or Peak All-Makes All-Models concentrate can be bought for around $10 at Walmart, sometimes they have $5 rebate per gallon.

Sorry to hear about the employment situation....

Since you have some time, Drain, flush with water a few times and put in Peak Global lifetime (easy find at NAPA for $11 full strength) and change out every 3-4 years.

Its the closest thing I could find for Toyota's.

peak global lifetime and zerex Asian are decent substitutes for toyota pink too. they are missing part of the additive package and will not last 100000 miles ,but will not damage anything either.

If it has the Toyota Super Long Life it's rated for TEN years-I'd leave it alone as long as it looks good!

The Toyota Red Long Life which is full strength would be compatable but's ~$18 a gallon, so not cheap either.

Bill suggests Peak Global Life full strength, but I also live in NC and my local NAPA's don't carry it. It would be best to do a complete exchange with it if you were going to use it. You could call and see if the local NAPA's can get it.

I've used universals (Prestone) with a complete flush in an 01 Tacoma with no issues. Even Chevron Supreme Low Silicated Full Strength Green from Food Lion would work with a total flush.

Not sure how long you've run it but as suggested, if it looks good just run it some more. It is supposed to be Super Long Life.

Zerex AVF would probably be the closet thing to the Toyota pink SLL. You could use Honda's fluid, it's blue but basically the same thing and I've seen dealers that have it for $16/gal. Peak Global would probably be the next closes thing. You could probably get away withHavoline or Zerex Dexcool. It's key that the coolant is always full and no leaks to run Dexcool.

What year and model do you have and how many miles?

I hear you when the chips are down, but look at is this way, if you NEED to change it, you also need to rely on that car to get you to interviews and your new job. I would not skimp on it. I just did mine, and honestly, it's worth the money for the peace of mind.
Like others, I wish you well on your job hunt. These is tough times indeed.

just a thought:
have you tried one of those online dealers? they usually offer 20-30% discount on parts... shipping coolant is not hazmat and is just ORM-D consumer commodity class so it's no big deal for even a monkey to box and ship this stuff

google "toyota trademotion" and just start shopping around... you'll need to figure out what the part # for the jug of coolant is though... my mom's corolla is only 3 years old so I obviously haven't bought this pink stuff yet (and not any time soon), so I can't help you with that but I'm sure somebody here will have that part #

I would use a parts store house brand for the best value like Pepboys Proline ALL makes all models or Advance Auto All makes all models. Just flush it with water like Bill said and you should be ok.

But I did buy some Pink last summer to top off our Corolla and it was about $17 for the 50/50 gallon but that was just to top it off...

Not only that - good ideas - but I simply called local Toyo dealers and got them down to $60 for a case of synthetic 0w20.
They started at $85. So, your point is a good one for the OP.

No, it's not old. It makes perfect sense. I have made decisions like this under similar circumstances. Being out of work does NOT equate into being BROKE.
And I stick to him using the good/correct fluids for his car. More important than when you DO have money.
Sounds like you have issues with anyone who might have money.
I've been broke, and I've been in the spot I'm in now - pretty well off. My way of thinking pretty much stays the same - just have to get more creative.

See where he says EVERY DOLLAR COUNTS?

If you spend the dollars (ie "it's only a few $$ more") then you will not have those dollars you WASTED.

He can get water. He has the time. Running what has been suggested here by myself and other members will work just as well as spending "only a little bit more".

As far as I've got a problem with people who have money (like you I guess) is no problems unless they give advice that is not factual. And I have the same problem if you don't have money and do the same.

Last time I checked, we don't have a poll when you sign up to find out how "well off" you are.
