Toyota overtakes Ford in vehicle sales

I heard this the other day . Not suprising. When you make a better refined, more highly reliable vehicle, it will sell. Now all Toyota has to do is make a Mustang killer in that price range and they will be set.

yeah to bad toyota / lexus engines 4 & 6 cylinders are becoming sludge monsters ..

I have yet to see proof of this. A friend of mine is a Master Toyota Tech and he said he hasn't seen a "sludged Toyota", except those that haven't changed their oil. One had around 21,000 miles without changing the oil, another has 14,000 miles. In those examples, you are right, they can sludge up.

But, if you change the oil, according to my friend, there is no problem. He recommends a 5,000 mile interval with conventional oil.

My wife had a 99 Lexus ES300 (V6) that had 75,000 miles on it; oil changes every 5,000 miles since new (Mobil 1 since 45,000 miles). When the valve cover was removed by the tech, it was very clean inside. We liked it so much, we went with the RX330 for the AWD.

My mom has a 99 Camry V6 with 36,000 miles on it. She has had oil changes with Mobil 1 every 5,000 miles; at the 30,000 mile service interval, the tech popped off the valve cover and it was extremely clean inside.

My sister has a 2001 Corolla (4 cyl) with over 60,000 miles. At the last service interval, no sign of sludge...she has her oil changed every 4,000 miles at Toyota.

I realize this is just 3 examples, but with documented oil changes, I don't believe the "sludge monster" is an accurate term.

Marcusbear tyou have the facts all wrong! THeir is not and never has been a sludge issue with any of Toyotas 4 cylinders. The sludge issue is only one particular V6 over a limited number of years in two applications. The problem is not the motor so much as a poor choiceof oil and oil change interval by TOyota. While it took them a few years to deal with it they are willing to give anyone with one new motor.

The Lexus line to date has not had any such issues unless you are talking about this single V6. Their V8's are the gold standard for durability and reliability.

SInce 1971 we have not had a single case of sludge in any of the TOyotas we have owned. We also did oil changes at 1800-3000 miles too until switching over to synthetic! Now we do 9000 mile oil changes regularly on all out of warranty cars and trucks and still do not have sludge. Mom and Dad run M1 faithfuly and I use a variety of Synthetics.

I almost find it funny that with so few vechiles being affect by the sludge issue (less then 1%) that it is so often refered too. Name me one domstic company that has never had a sludgeing issue, or 40+ year history of gasket failures, oil consuption head and manifold warpage, over heating....... Personely I think it is far worse when a company uses the same design for 40+ years and still can not routinely get it right!

as much as i bash ford, they seem to be getting it together. they have re-staffed their sta program, and they are taking a more aggressive approach to supplier development. i think they have quit relying so much on qs9000 and they are starting to do a better job of working with suppliers from the beginning of a program.

it will take a few years to show some progress.

Now is the time to buy FORD stock!

The issue with sludge is rediculous! That has been covered on this forum numerous times!

Just goes to show you if you build a half-way decent product people will buy. Toyota is far from perfect but their competition is just so far behind that they can and will eventually be number 1.

I think Toyotas quality has slipped over the years. This is partly due to their competition being lazy and not excelling their product lines which allows Toyota to fall back a bit. We all pay the price of that!

check out the complaint station . com the toyota sludge problem is the number one complant in this site.. I have a neighbor with a 1998 toyota van ( sienna ) change oil with mobil 1 every 3k -5k miles engine sludged @ about 60k miles .. changed oil himself .. toyota said owner did not changed oil often enough .. $5000 for new engine .. if toyota is not having problems w/ these engines sludging up why did they come special program for these engines.. oh I know only people owning vehicles with certain engines on certain models between certain years do not change their oil on time ..also check msn. com look up a used camry even they are listing engine problems .. you may have never had a problem with a toyota but that does not mean their aren't problems with them ..

Its not that there isn't problems with Toyotas, there is just like any other manufacturer. Its just that Toyotas have fewer problems.
