yes i agree he is a bit vague. The most affordable MTF is GM synchromesh...Toyota recommends 75w90 (or 80w I forget) GL-4 or GL-5, which is odd, Is synchromesh too thin? also, is the friction modified better than standard synchromesh?

I think there is some confusion here Nick. A GL-4 spec ONLY relates to the protection rating. If Toyota recommends a 75W90 GL-4, then you want a Manual Transmission application specific fluid such as Amsoil MTG or Redline MT-85, which are Synchromesh fluids.

If you are in Canada where the temp gets below zero C most of the time, then GM Synchromesh could work for you.

The Pennzoil 56076 you mentioned has a rather high viscosity for low temperature operation.

copied directly from my owners manual:

MANUAL TRANSAXLE
(oil capacity L)
5s-fe engine 2.2L
1MZ-FE engine 4.2L
Oil type:
Gear oil API GL-4 or GL-5
recommended viscosity:
SAE 75W90.

Very specific wording by toyota, I think this trans might share its lube with the diff, making me wonder if the gear oil additives really are required? I certainly dont know. But the book clearly says gear oil.

average daytime high is july is over 80F, not uncommon to see well into the 90's, but january lows are where the thin synchromesh oil may really help, but were into spring now so I really want a nice shifting car for the next 6 months, don't want to burn up my gearbox on my roadtrip to Vancouver this august (3 days solid highway driving)

If the transmission and differential are in one unit or share fluid, which we call a transaxle, the you might try the Amsoil MTG or the Redline MT-85 or the GM Synchromesh.

The Anti-wear additives are sufficient for a transaxle since most transaxle differentials are not usually hypoid types, but spider gear types.

Try to find a Tech Manual online and find out for sure whether it is a tansaxle or not.
