Up through 2011, that engine was ran with 5W-30. In 2012, the switch was made to 0W-20.

What's the difference between a 2011 2GR-FE and a 2014 2GR-FE that would require a different viscosity?

The cap on my 2010 2GR-FE calls for 0w-20. Dealer installed 5w-20 during it's service and so did I once, but now switched to 0w-20. Manual says to use 0w-20 but 5w-20 is ok and needs to be changed back to 0w-20 at next service. The manual from my 2003 1MZ-FE says to use 5w-30 and 10w-30 is ok but needs to be changed back to 5w-30 at next service, go figure. Reading between the lines, these engines will run on just about anything. Take your pick

According to Amsoil, which gets their information straight from the manufacturers, you're supposed to be running 5W-30 in your 2010 2GR-FE.

My 2012 Avalon 2GR-FE specs 5w30 and 5000 OCI. The 2013 goes to 0w20 and 10,000 OCI. The wife's 2008 2GR-FE is also 5w30.

The 2GR-FE in our 2011 Sienna specs 0w20 oil. I don't think there is anything different with the engine that requires it over 5w30. I believe they specify the thinner oil for better cold starting performance and fuel economy.

Never have heard anyone damaging anything from oil that's too thin. Of course now that I say that someone will show up and prove me wrong.
