This GL-5 oil is sold here and I like the viscosity spread, but I am concerned about using a LSD oil in an open diff.
Is there any disadvantage using this in an open diff ?

Usually it fine to use a LSD gear oil in a non-LSD differential but I don't want to give the wrong information. This has been discussed many times and here is an old(2010) post on this. I believe that any owner's manual wants the owner(to make sure) to at the very least, use ONLY an LSD additive/gear oil in an LSD diff.

I've ONLY used LSD gear oil(GF-5) in the Firebird in my signature and our previous Lexus RX AWD and neither vehicle has an LSD diff.

I've always been told/heard that LSD in a non-LSD diff is no problem.

It's still rated GL5 so it has the protection you need. Seals and gaskets are going to be the same thing regardless of LSD or not, there's nothing else in the diff that the additive could hurt.

I'd have to double-check, but I think the Valvoline full syn 75W90 I've got in my Ranger is LSD, and the only thing in the Ranger is an e-locker, so it is essentially an open diff. I didn't think twice about using it.

When you use a friction modified gear oil that was blended for a Limited Slip Differential in a Open Differential you get the benefit of slightly lower running temperatures. In other words, you can use it without any problems, and as a bonus your differential will run slightly cooler as the friction modifier reduces friction and causes less wear and slightly lower running temperatures.

No, absolutely none.

On Toyotas, I think there should be a sticker or tag on the diff is it is LSD.

Disadvantages.....
Some LS additives increase seal/gasket degradation
Some LS additives lead to higher oxidation rate of gear oil
Some LS additives increase shear rate of the gear oil

I haven't seen the benefit of lower operating temps on an diff or gearbox with LS fluid when compared without.

IMO, if you don't have an LS, you should make the effort to use a non-LS fluid.
