Although it's only at 40,000 miles, the timing belt on the '01 Camry is 9 years old and I am going to be replacing it this weekend. I know I can get away with the belt snapping on this engine, but it's not going to be convenient to get a tow truck, etc. because you never know where and when it may fail.

Anyhow, below is my "shopping list" and as always, I was wondering what fellow BITOGers think of it. Anything missed out? Anything worth adding? Thanks!

- 1 engine mount (located above the timing belt cover, others are fine)
- Timing belt and tensioner
- Cam and crank seals
- Oil pump seal
- Coolant pump and gasket
- Idler pulley
- Coolant
- PCV valve

I'm thinking I might as well go ahead and replace the valve cover gasket whilst I'm at it. The thermostat and drive belts are still new, with less than 4 months on them.

If this is the first belt replacing the tensioner and idler on this paticular engine is not needed. The is very little tension on the 5SFE belt and it's common for those tensioners to go way past 150,000 MILES. The only thing I see that you don't have listed is the oil pump o-ring. It fits behind the outer part of the oil pump and they are very common to leak even at 60K miles or less. No big deal to change out. Bout 5-6 10mm head bolts and it pops off in your hand. Use some petroleum jelly to hold the new one in place so it won't move while you install the pump.(Don't use wheel bearing grease). Toyota came up with a new spring to put more tension on the belt(the spring fits on the tensioner)but I have never really seen a difference.
Usually, if the dogbone is bad( mount above the belt)the front mount is either broken or weak but not always. Front mounts usually last past the 100K mark. The PCV valves are solid steel and a little carb clean in it will make it like new. I usually take them off first let them soak while I do the rest of the job then clean them up spray a little lubricant like WD-40 or PB Blaster and they are as-new. At this mileage the VC gasket is in good shape(unless you just like tinkering on your car) If not you can pull the plug wires out of the spark plug tubes and you will find that the 30mm retaining nuts will be somewhat loose. This is from the gasket shrinking since assembly at the factory. Tighten up those nuts and it's good to go for another 60K.

You're pretty much set - just be sure to use a OEM Toyota t-belt since it does have markings to make your life easier during installation.

Don't forget the O ring behind water pump to block face. It's supplied with the water pump, and a lot of people can't be bothered replacing it...but it will be flat and if disturbed will leak.A genuine Toyota pump will come complete with back housing,so is a no brainer to fit the complete thing.Replace all tensioners and idlers.I've seen enough fail to not consider reusing.
