'09 YARIS . It reads about 3/16 of an inch over the FULL mark . Could this harm the YARIS engine ? Would this be about 1/4 of a quart over ? Should I dump it soon after the 1,000 mile break in period stated in owners manual ? Or sooner ? There's 426 miles for now , more to come . Have noticed that all the TOYOTAs we've bought are always overfull from the factory . Calls for 3 and 1/2 quarts with filter . Have been driving it everyday for an average of 90 miles at different speeds for break in , as printed in manual . THANKS

My Wife's 2004 Xterra has a 3.5 qt sump. Small for a V6.
(I run Mobil 1, or other full synthetics, 10w30 and have a sample of the last 5000mi OCI off to Blackstone.)

It takes very little, like 4-6oz, to make significant changes to the fill levels on the dipstick.
American cars typically, from the "add" mark to the "full" mark is 1 quart.
This is not so in foreign cars, as they have less capacity, (and I think the conversion from Metric to Standard really freaks them out).

I too would not worry about it.

It's such a small amount, I'd find it hard to believe it could be a problem. My Ford owner manuals say that when new or just after an oil change the oil level may be above the full mark and that it's not a problem unless it is way over the full mark (and they tell you where). It goes on to say when topping up not to go over the full mark. Your manual may shed some light as far as TOYO goes.

says to dump / change oil at 5,000 miles . Figure dumping factory fill early would help flush it and get oil at correct level . Thanks .

So, what if your Yaris came with 1/2 way between the F and the L mark, would you post again and rant about TOYO being 1/2 qt low?

also: are you always checking your oil dipstick when your engine is warm (just shut off) and are you checking it when it's on level ground?

Just drive it and forget about it.

Q.

Mine is sometimes a fraction of an inch over the full mark when I add the recommended amount to my car (4 quarts), depending on the oil filter used... Don't worry about it, 3/16 of an inch is nothing to be concerned about at all.

It's typical on this engine for some reason. Mine also was over 1/8" appx. on the 1.5 Prius engine, which is the same basic engine as yours with an Atkinson cylinder head. There is lots of discussion on forums about it. It amounts to a few ounces. It does no harm. You should see the different Japan made filter on there at first change. I changed at 1100 miles, others don't with no apparent harm. I find the length of oil draining and how hot the oil is makes a considerable difference in the fill level later. My manual states 3.9 US qs with filter which is slightly too much. They haven't corrected the specs or the dipstick in years now and that is a little strange as one or the other is off. I ordered the longer original Japan 4cyl Camry filters from a dealer as the filter is identical in every way except length is about 3/4-1" longer.

It could very well be that, if the car calls for a capacity in metric units, it doesn't convert to imperial very well. I mean, if the official capacity comes to, say, 3.875 quarts, the factory could very well put in a gallon of oil and forget about it.

I wouldn't worry about it. If I had to choose, I'd rather have a car slightly overfilled than underfilled!

i overfilled by about the same amount on my last 2 oil changes. it seems to "make" oil even though after the change the levels seem fine. but the handbook recommended amount is fine (4.3 liters)

I have always put .5 qts more than what my Mazda3 calls for, works for me. More oil = Better

the '07 PRIUS we had came overfull . Ran that until around 2,000 miles . That took 3 and 1/2 quarts with new oil filter and would be at the FULL mark .

What signs, if there are any, indicate that an engine is having problems because of being overfilled? Noises, hesitation...?

could be . Noticed some black soot in end of tailpipe today . Now has around 580 miles on new motor . About 420+ miles more for break in period of 1,000 miles that's impiled in owners manual . Hoping RITE-AID or someone will have conventional PENNZOIL , SHELL , or VALVOLINE on sale for less than $2 a quart so can do drain and fill at 1,500 or so miles .

rechecked oil , seems like the factory fill oil is more like 1/2 quart over ( 1/4 of an inch over the full line ) . My belief is when on assembly line the oil is preset to 4 quarts and pumped in like that at fast oil change chains or your local dealer service center . Picked up 5 quart jug of conventional PENNZOIL 5w30 at WALLYWORLD for $10 ( $12 minus $2 instant rebate ) . The YARIS has close to 1,200 miles and will pour about 3 and 1/2 quarts in . How much of a hassle is it to pour oil from these big 5 quart jugs ? Kinda gives me the willies . If I get oil on her new engine she'll rip me a new one :- ) . So far we've been averaging close to 39 m.p.g. with the '09 4 door liftback with automatic . ;- )
