Was on highway passing wrecker with crushed SUV on flatbed and Two wheels on ground older Subaru STI.

Wow those front wheels were spinning like mad as truck was doing 65 mph. Not sure I would want a used driveline especially AWD.

SUV on the bed and Subi getting the one end lift tow on the back of the flatbed. AKA the junk tow.

Sounds like the Subaru had its rear wheels on the ground, and the fronts were thus turning?

I guess it matters if automatic or manual, and if the coupling between front/rear was viscous or something else. A viscous coupling might heat up due to the axles not being the same rpm--but then again, free spinning wheels take no power to turn.

Looks bad but I'm not sure if it matters.

Yeah, seen it many times. Usually haulers just taking vehicles to the junkyard…but like you or someone said previously, wouldn’t want to buy drivetrain components off that car.
The only kind I've seen on the rear of a flatbed were the type where you strap the tires down.

The wheel hoops or whatever you want to call them aren’t permanent. Push a pin and pull and they’re out. You can swap them for all sorts of jack pads and other attachments to lift pull cradle however you want.
