Tough Chicken

I doubt that. The longer an animal stays alive, the more it costs to raise.
Laying hens at end of life. These would normally be sold to be made chicken nuggets but with the chicken shortage this might be it.

It's an interesting question to ask their corporate office.

Chickens who lead free lives will have tough muscles. But I doubt that Costco will sell natural chicken meat - it's too expensive and there is not enough production for it.

They probably are selling elderly chicken meat.

Not really. The revolution in tasteless, mass-produced chicken was in the breeding of the modern white broiler. It was bred to grow quickly and have larger parts that people wanted - large drumsticks and large breast meat.

I've had friends from other parts of the world say that KFC is much better in some countries because they still use heritage chicken breeds.

Once I was cheap and my wife asked me to go to an Asian supermarket and get a chicken for making soup, since they had better prices and often had different kinds of chicken. I ended up getting a "stewing chicken". So we made the chicken soup and the flavor was fine, but man the meat was just so tough. Learned that it was just an older hen that could no longer lay eggs.

I've had KFC in India and in Europe, and I definitely prefer the taste over there compared to what we get here in the US.

Some good information on this thread. We have gotten tough chicken breast a couple of times in the last few years. The last time was at a Spartan store with the store brand (cant recall the name) we called the number on the package and they mailed us coupons for replacement. I now try to buy the packages with the smaller breasts.

How many times did I hear my grandma tell the story of her friend who cooked a rooster?
That was tough fowl.

Has anyone seen a picture of one of these "growth hormone treated" chickens just walking about? They gotta be 4 feet tall given the size of the feet I see in stores.

They got chicken feet in the stores? Oh dear, I wouldn't want to see that.
