Gonna purchase a push mower under $500. Would you favor a Toro or a Troy-Bilt? Self propelled or not? 5000 sq ft yard. Bank on one side sloping
down to neighbor's yard.

Neither...I'd spend $50 more to get one of the Honda self-propelled units from Home Depot before they are gone forever. You won't regret it.

Honda 21" Mower @ Home Depot
I have one. Not impressed. Plastic tires-wheels like a child’s toy. Plastic mower deck shroud that distorts (heat) and the blades strike the shroud. Had to trim a section out of the shroud. Mulch or bag only. If in thick high grass you can’t discharge clippings….it clumps the clippings and chokes. Toro Personal Pace is a better choice.

The $550 Honda mower has a metal deck, not plastic. I own both and have never had any issues with either deck. Toro's Personal Pace is an acquired taste like sushi...I despise it compared to the Honda's paddle control.

So some of you think it's ok to buy a mower that is being discontinued? I'm sorta confused. I have a 1994 Honda rider that has been
perfect. Basically a John Deere deck and frame with a Honda engine. I'm a Honda fan. I had gotten vibes that Honda Push Mowers had declined in quality. What am I missing? Catch me up to speed.

Basic Toro non self propelled if you’re healthy and will be for years to come. Self propelled mowers aren’t as easy to finesse.

I don't want to start a Honda vs. Toro mower war here, but my perception/observation is that Toro's Recycler (not Super Recycler) mower quality has declined, especially with the adoption of the "no-maintenance" B&S EXi engine that doesn't specify oil changes.

I actually believe the current $550 metal deck Honda mower was improved with the lever operated "Clip Director" feature over the predecessor HRN-216 model that I own while the engine and deck quality have remained steady over the years. The rumor that Honda mower quality has declined in recent years is attributed to the defective polymer camgear that plagued a run of motors in early 2024. Honda issued a "stop sale" order and recalled all push mowers from stores in the 3rd quarter of 2024 to replace the defective cam gears. The last Honda mowers available now are the new upgraded units that were retrofitted and sent back out in 2025. While Honda mower sales are being discontinued in the U.S., replacement parts will continue to be available for the foreseeable future since international mower sales will continue overseas, along with sale of Honda OPE engines in the U.S.

The Toro Super Recycler is what I would buy. Troy Bilt is not the high quality product it once was. I believe they are made by MTD which I wouldn't buy.

I just replaced my 20 year old Toro Recycler (sent it to my elderly Mother's house where I'll use it to mow her lawn) with a new one. I have loved my old Recycler (has over 500 hours on it) but this new one is a much cheaper version. Much lighter weight and everything on the motor but the block and cylinder is plastic. (flywheel, carb, recoil start) Unfortunately the way the world is going.. lower quality and more money. Funny thing about the Briggs motor (that supposedly doesn't need oil changes). The owner's info clearly explains the need for an initial oil change and regular changes thereafter. It provides clear detail on how to change it.
$479 before taxes.

I got a 30 year old lawn boy that runs like a top a two stroke, I would probably look on marketplace and get something cheap and used, but that’s just me

If you’re patient, you can still find one of these used on CL or FB. John Deere JX75 with the Kawasaki 160V 6 hp with pressure lubed engine with oil filter for the sloped yard, TT 5 speed transmission, aluminum deck, blade brake clutch etc. I’ve had these 2 for over 10 years and they still run and start like new. I paid $60 for one and $150 for the other. They sold new for around $600.00 each in 1998.

As a brand I would lean towards Toro, but I would also probably shop around on marketplace for a 3-5 year old unit and you will easy save 100-200 bucks over brand new.

I don't like Front Wheel Drive self propelled models. Many people do, for the ease of lifting the front and turning around. But on hills and climbs, the FWD is terrible. Also FWD tends to get longer grass wrapped around the non-differential spinning front axle. Making for annoyance.

Some of Toro's RWD units also use small wheels and low rear axle bar, and grinds on any hump in the terrain. Differential action is done by a ratchet in each wheel's drive. Take a look under the mower and decide if this is OK for your situation. This is my 60V mower, and it is used just for finishing around the front of the house. I try to mow the swale (ditch) with it, but it just drags everywhere.

The best mower ever made (Snapper Commercial), IMHO. It simply rocks!! Steel wheels, real differential, castering front wheels, etc. It is more than 25 years old. Needs a bit of love, but still works perfectly.

Mower deck SHROUD. That’s underneath.
