I want to buy a new Toro 721E with electric start and was wondering if anyone knows who makes the engine. It is a 212 CC overhead valve. I'm thinking its a Band S.
Thanks,
Pete

That's a good chunk of $$$ for a single stage snow blower. Most people say it will handle up to 12 inches of fresh snow but above that it struggles.

If they don't have the brand advertised in your face, it's a Chonda.

212 cc is an extremely common size, around 6.5- 7 hp.

I believe those engines are Loncin engines (Chinese) and built to Toro's specs. The Ariens dealer down the street says he has had less warranty claims on the Loncin powered machines than the Briggs machines, so they can't be that bad.

Those toro snowblowers are excellent.. Class leading I'd say.

Single stage have many advantages vs 2-stage.

2 stage are not always superior.

Quick non-exhaustive list.

Single stage advantages.

Cheaper(a 500$ 2 stage will usually be awful to run)
More maneuverable/faster (on smaller or odd shaped driveway)
Lighter
Easily storage-less space.
Portable.
Wont clog ever. Might stall it on the roadside 2ft slush mound from the plow but it wont clog.

Thanks for the replies guys. I just don't have enough area to justify a 2 stage.
I also want the smaller machine and electric start for my wife to be able to use when I'm gone, which is almost half the month.
I figured if I buy it from an Echo dealer I always deal with, he will take care of me if it breaks. Same price as Home Depot. $569.
Thanks again.
Pete

Generally speaking you shouldn't try to use a single stage on a rock or gravel driveway unless you like Gatling guns. They don't move themselves unless the impeller can get down to pavement and drag the unit along.
I have a Poulan single stage which cost about half the price of the Toro, delivered by Amazon, and that Chonda always starts no matter how cold. It's got good power as well. Hint, use synthetic oil for easier starting.

Yep. Loncin has been producing "Chondas" for a long time now. Good engines.

Ariens and others have been using LCTs for 4-5yrs or so. "Liquid Combustion Technology". They seem OK. Time will tell.

Those Toro single stages are awesome machines. I own a CCR Powerlite and it is great for decks and sidewalks. I've gone through 12" of snow without a struggle. They are very easy to maintain, parts are easy to get, and they are well built. There is a reason you see one in the back of almost every plow truck.

+1. The Toro single stage is a nice unit.
It comes down to the proper tool for the job.
The people who think that a two stage is required for every snow removal endeavor think that to hang a nail for a picture properly requires a 16 lb. sledge.

I feel the ultimate solution is to have both a toro single stage and an Ariens 2 stage...my wife can't understand why anyone needs multiple snow blowers! You've got to have the right tool for the job, I tell her! ( still don't think she believes me)

I owned a Toro221QRE (two cycle single stage) and an 11 h.p. 29" two stage large frame Simplicity.

In areas of lots of snow, if a person can only have one machine, a healthy two stage snow blower is the way to go. However, I have to admit that over the years, the Toro was used 90% of the time and it was a very impressive snow mover. Despite it's capabilities, in the event of fairly common blizzards that dump large amounts of snow, the Toro couldn't chew it's way though 3' of drifted snow just to get out of the garage. It was simply overwhelmed. That's when the Simplicity would earn it's keep.

The bottom line is that without the big two stage machine, the driveway would not be cleared unless a contractor was called to dig us out and that can take days just to get them there.

As previously stated, it's nice to have the right tool(s) for the job.

Well, bought the 721E today.. Really nice machine. What struck me is how easy it is to work on it. Started on the first pull and seems like quality construction. The electric start will be great for my wife.
Only complaint is where the Tyne activator goes in to the handle, it made a terrible racket rattling. I had to put electrical tape around it and stick the connections back in the holes in the handle to quite it down. Should have addressed this from the factory!

Have used this snowblower about 10 times so far this winter.. Runs great, starts easily and has a lot of power. Changed the FF at 2 hrs as required and did have some glitter in the oil. Filled it with Amsoil OE 5W30 and noticed immediately a drop in fuel consumption. Changing the FF made a huge difference. Great machine.

my 1991? ccr2450 is still going strong. Starting to rust abit.. but It does have a 5 year old full metal carb on it and the blades, scraper and belt are 5 years old as well.

LOVE the 2 cycle engine. It is considerably louder than the poulan pro I have at another location that despite being a pos.. works quite well... now if the wheels just rolled straight... oh well.
