Top War Movies in honor of Memorial Day

In honor of the holiday weekend, one of the local sports talk shows here just ran down the hosts' and callers' list of top-10 war movies involving US soldiers.

The usual suspects were obviously named: Saving Private Ryan, Patton, Mash, etc.

One they missed that is not in my top 3-5, but would be on my top 10-15: Stalag 17. Also liked The Caine Mutiny, and Guns of Navarone (which was on the list).

Let's hear some others on your top-ten list.
 
Some of my favorites:

* "Run Silent, Run Deep." A classic US WWII Pacific theater submarine movie with Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster.

* "U-571." A fictional movie about a group of US submariners going after code gear on a disabled Nazi submarine. While I say "fictional", it really is a composite tale of many British and US attempts to capture WWII Enigma code machines.

* "K19 - The Widowmaker." A based-on a true story movie about the Soviet Union's first nuclear missile submarine.

* "Das Boot." A German movie about the U-96. A very accurate movie about life on a U-boat. Interestingly, while the XO is a fervent Nazi, the CO is not. Portions of the movie are absolutely riveting.

* "The Hunt for Red October." Equipped with a silent propulsion system, a Soviet missile boat and its crew defects to the US.

While I was never in the Navy...I did build sub parts for a little bit...so they've always fascinated me.

* "Band of Brothers." While not really a movie I guess, but a series of movies, it is EXCELLENT. "Hey look, Shermans! 'bout [censored] time...well hello second armored!"

I LOVE this movie - especially when the chief is able to rebuild the sub and bring it back to the surface after they have been depth charged to the bottom. Call me weird, but I like to watch it in German with the English subtitles on.
 
I like aviation war movies such as:

Memphis Bell.

Twelve O'Clock High,

SAC,

Battle of Britain,

The Dam Busters,

633 Squadron.
 
To H-e-l-l and Back with Audie Murphy is a good example of the 1950's era war movies, cliches and all.


Oops - good things bear repeating, right NHHEMI?

The Green Berets, Midway, Band of Brothers, Blackhawk Down, Saving Private Ryan, The Dirty Dozen, Kelly's Heros.

Go Tell the Spartans - (1978, with Burt Lancaster.)
A Bridge Too Far - (Operation Market Garden. Last of the big battle/all-star cast movies.)
Exodus - (Not exactly a war movie, but it revolves around a fight for survival.)

This one hasn't been mentioned yet:

Command Decision (1948) Clark Gable Walter Pidgeon Van Johnson

The junior commander of the bomber group (Gable) is in charge while his CO (Pidgeon) is absent and orders up the most dangerous missions possible in order to destroy the German jet factories while the window of opportunity remains open despite political and military pressures to do otherwise. No battle scenes but riveting nonetheless.

Run Silent, Run Deep with Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster , Bataan,staring Robert Taylor is great and Back to Bataan, with John Wayne. They were Expendable, In Harms Way, and Pearl Harbor.
 
There were so many good war movies to name it all.

I like Das Boot too. WW2 is long gone, I look at the crew of Das Boot like every other submarine crew including US crews. They are good soldiers just like us, only difference was they were born in another country which we fought against 70 years ago.
 
the SAC movie shows the B-36 bomber. i think its the LARGEST bomber that the U.S.A. ever made. the 6 pusher piston engines has 4 rows of radial cylinders on EACH engine. over 4,xxx cubic inches each engine. and was used on the experimental B-50 bomber, a over sized B-29.
