Top War Movies in honor of Memorial Day

Plopping down on the couch watching a hollywood fabrication would be the worst possible way to honor those who have died serving our country.

If you really want to do something to honor those who have died, go to your local cemetery and spend the day helping to reset the grave markers of those who died in service. Or search out family members of those who have died in service and do something special for them. There are dozens of ways to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and their families.

But sitting around watching a movie in "honor" of Memorial Day is truly pathetic.

I disagree. It's not that it's a "hollywood fabrication" but that is serves as a reminder for what we have thanks to those we lost. Few of our current generation recognize, or even care, about what happened during the past. Yes it is a movie and yes it is fictionalized but if it gets you thinking at all then it was worth it.

Why just the one day? This should be expected.

This I do agree with. Get out and enjoy what you have and give thanks to those that made it possible.

I would rather watch a documentary and see real soliders and Marines in action than watch some silly Hollywood movie with George Clooney / Matt Damon / Tom Cruise or some other jack [censored].

When it comes to movies, there is Hollywood heroism and its contrary cynicism...and then there's this...

[I hope no one will take offense....]

I think of Memorial Day as a reminder to us of ALL who've died in combat for their country...let's face it...soldiers don't make policy, right or wrong, but their patriotism drives them to fight for their country, and to die for it...perhaps there ought to be a world-wide memorial day for a universal reminder of their sacrifice.

That said, the most moving tribute to soldiers I've seen is "The Burmese Harp"

...a Japanese soldier refuses to return home after WW II,
...to stay behind instead, to bury the dead....

No surprise ending, just dedication and sacrifice...soldier to soldiers...after the shooting ends...

I found the time to watch 12 O'Clock High and The Best Years of our Lives, plus several that were not widely known but told a good story.

No everyone can be a hyper-vigilant patriot, either through the year or only at one of the observed veteran days. We do what we can, when we can. All our tethers are of different lengths.
