Just because a gas company isn't listed does not mean they don't

meet or exceed the top tier qualificactions. Participation is voluntary and some firms have decided not to participate because they don't want you to know that their LOWEST grade exceeds the requirements. They don't want to cut into the Premium sales.

PSS - From the tone of your post, I'm assuming that you or someone in your family works for the huge, BP refinery located on the lakeshore at Whiting, IN.

There's also some business politics being played out on this issue, as BP & Ford have a strategic alliance, whereas Chevron and GM are also in alliance and GM recommends Top Tier fuels for its vehicles.

well, since i have OCD, thanks to this site, I wrote Mobil (then again, we don't have a lot of them around here)

Your email was sent to me for response.

ExxonMobil fuels contain additive levels equal to or higher than required
by the
Top Tier program. While ExxonMobil would expect to receive Top Tier
certification
if it applied for the certification, as a practice, we do not comment on
future business
decisions. We are concerned about the unilateral approach of the program
sponsors,
and do not believe that the program is in the best interest of the motoring
public.
ExxonMobil is concerned that the Top Tier program may actually increase
customer
confusion regarding product quality.

Thank you for contacting ExxonMobil.

That sounds like marketing doublespeak to me. Nobody really wants to be judged/tested against a known standard, becuase that would allow people to price shop between "approved" brands. Hence they refuse to be participate and release confusing emails to inquireys.

we have one refinery in my area that supplies all the gas, including top tier,so i guess your at the mercy of some one adding the detergent package.(i'm sure that gets done, everytime)

Tht ExxonMobil rep failed to give his name - also failed to say that Mobil gas meets or exceeds IN ALL THREE octane offerings IN DETERGENCY.

BP techs by email have said basically the same thing as this Mobil rep. When asked a 2nd time to include all three octane offerings, the BP rep replied by stating that just the BP Premium met the Top-Tier rating.

I suspect the same thing with ExxonMobil. If you email him back, ask for verification on all three octanes in detergency - then ask for his real name for confirmation.

BTW... I use two gas credit cards... Shell and Mobil. None of the other Top Tier brands - outside of Shell, are available here in Southeastern Michigan.

Of the stations you listed above (Citgo, Sunoco & Hess), Sunoco is the only one I'd consider in your area. Some Sunoco stations offer Ultra 94 octane, the highest octane premium gasoline commercially available in the U.S.
In my area, we predominantly see Shell, BP, EM and Speedway. There is one Chevron station in Cincinnati (a few in Northern Kentucky). IMO, the three best gasolines (in this order) are Chevron, Shell & Sunoco.
