I have had good blackstone reports on my 98 volvo N.A. using Penn YB dino and 7k OCI's. I thought I would stretch a 10K OCI using synth. The volvo burns 1 qt. per 2000 miles and I am wondering if at the 8K mark if it makes any difference if I use synth to top it off or if dino would make a difference. I have a bunch of dino, which is why I am thinking of using it as the final top off to get me to 10K. Is this short sighted?

I think its a great idea. I use dino to top off syn. Why not? If the change out is within 3-4000 miles or less, zero implications with dino top off.

Additionally, I top off syn 5-30 with one dino 10-30, to mitigate whatever shearing is present just a bit.

Why pollute your beautiful syn oil run with that nasty dino oil?

Did you go out to eat this week? If so that was your Qt or 2 of syn oil.

Suck it up man and buy the good stuff!

Ok, yeah. Top it off with the cheapest dino oil you have since you are draining it soon. I did this with GC quite regularly, I limit my top-off to one quart of the good oil and the rest is whatever.

You could have a problem depends on how often one tops off. For instance if you where driving a COrvette and trying to do a 1 year OCI with AMsoil and you where burning off 1/4 to 1/2 a quart every 1000 miles it wouldnot take long before you had burnt off all the synthetic and replaced it with dino. So your 1 year OCI would not reflect the use of AMsoil at all rather the top off oil. So it really depends on many factors.

Well, it certainly isn't a matter of cost. I can basically afford any oil on the market. It's a matter of practicality. In my case, my 10 year old Chevy Silverado goes 5000 miles with full syn. At about the 3500 mile mark, I need a top off quart. So, the good dino only stays in for 1500 miles, and I still have 4 of the 5 quarts in the engine full syn. How could that possibly hurt anything? The fresh additives alone in that 1 qt. of dino helps out, as does the single 10-30 mixing with 4 sheared 5-30's. Just makes good sense, IMO.

I prefer to top off with what I put in the sump.
I don't think you'll do any harm at all by topping off with dino.
OTOH, why not just use dino to begin with?
I agree with ZZman.
If you've sprung for a syn for the initial fill, why not plan on having enough of the same in reserve for top-ups?

I see you have learned a lot since you've been here...

I'd use the cheaper conventional oil for topping off near the end of the OCI. No point in wasting $$$$.

+1

One man's waste is another man's necessity.

It won't hurt anything.

I am just old and don't like change!!!!!!

It will not cause problems at all but why? If you can afford 4 quarts to fill the sump surely you can afford 1 more quart to keep on hand for top off if you need to? I have never had to top off more then 1/4 of a quart before so I do not have the problem some do where they find themselves in the middle of an OCI and are 1 quart low! I would shoot the manufacture if I had a engine that ate oil like that on a regular basis! Then again their is a reason GM went bankrupt but I am sure it is not because their engines are old, vibrate to much, wear like a cave man assembled the engine in a cave, leak or burn excessive amounts of oil in all but 1-2 engine designs etc.......None of that had anything to do with it I am sure!

So go for it.....I have to agree that if I had an engine that was eating a quart of synthetic half way through the OCI I too would consider topping it off with anything I had on hand. If you have any plans though on extended oil changes I would not go near the dino!

cause it would be a waste of money if it doesn't give any additional benefit to use synthetic plus I have a bunch of dino.

I look at it differently. My car uses about 1/2 qt (M1 10W30) midway between OCI's and I put in M1 15W50. I've seen where oil thins out during use,and the TBN gets used up, so I figure I want to put in a healthy shot to help out. It's only 1/2 quart for me, but your usage is a little more.

I top off with whatever is sitting open on the shelf. If I have to open a bottle I use what is in the sump and the left over becomes the fleet top off oil. I have topped off my Harley 20w50 syn with Quicksilver 25w40 marine oil because it was open. Makes no difference to me. Use up your dino.
