Well, surprise surprise.
My son is driving here in his 4 day old BMW i4 M50 on Fathers Day. So looking forward to seeing the car and checking it out.
Also thrilled at the last minute text Saturday morning that he will make the drive on Sunday, check out the car, go to dinner (reservations made) and he will also sleep over.

I did some math for him since he likes Buc-ee's
The first leg of the 256 mile trip he can stop 175 miles at Buc-ee's to charge. It's then 85 miles to our house from there.
He also has a gas X5 but obviously will take the EV. It will add an hour to the drive 4 hour though, in order to charge it up before he gets here. .

Excited to see him and the car. I woke up to his text message this Sat morning. Great Fathers Day it will be, more so the surprise text and offer to drive here!
The weather sucks here at the coast for a week now, never know when thunderstorms will pass through. Hope we at least get some sunshine in-between (I am sure we will)

Anyway, nice last minute surprise for Father's Day.

This is great! I'm sure this is also a father's day trip that's a bit more important due to your prostate battle. I know that I've found myself spending more time with my dad since he had his prostate surgery. It's a reminder to spend as much time as you can with those you love. Hope I'm not being awkwardly emotive here, but hugs to both of you, enjoy your time together and I hope you have a blast in the car with him!

THANK YOU, WITHOUT QUESTION ITS MORE IMPORTANT, even for my son and daughter in law. They have been incredible though she wont be here tomorrow out of everyone in my family she contacts me the most to see how I am doing. Really sincere and I can also sense this in my son and believe this or not, even my X-wife who checks in now and then.

There are some that you feel let down when something like this happens and thankfully they are the polar opposite. Really incredible and proud of him, he had his struggles as a teenager (but always worked hard) and truly grew up into the pride in my family.

Yes, if you have the proper plug. I have the NEMA 110V 5-15, the dryer 30A 10-30 and 14-50.
Here's the Tesla Adapters. BMW must have something similar.

As long as he has a mobile car adapter -yes.

For fun, go sit on a Supercharger for 15 minutes to get a feel for it, if your schedule permits.

I've said this before, and it may sound silly, but EV ownership, while different, is not the hardship many seem to think. Just my 2 cents...

Yes, if it’s a 14-30, it would take the specific plug for that outlet.

Push come to shove purchase a dryer pigtail for that connector, then an electrical box and outlet appropriate for whatever mobile EVSE one has, and wire it up.

He tells me he cant use a Tesla Super Charger on the BMW. However maybe he just doesnt know? He only had the car 4 days and has been working. However Buc-ee's has Tesla and others

I get that but we both agree that is really depends on the specific use. Not for everyone. In this case as an example, the 4 hour gasoline trip will take at least 5 hours with the EV and that is ok if the individual doesnt mind. Im NOT knocking EVs it is a point though, that for some cases it is not as convenient. He does love the 3.5 second 0 to 60. Hasn't had too much time to play yet, Fathers Day will be his first day off since getting it. The 5 hours will not make as much difference this time since he is sleeping over but many times we do same day trips/ also at this point I am sure he doesnt know how long it will take to charge.

I will find interesting the (Launch Control) not sure how much use on an EV vs the M50 gas model he had but I will find out tomorrow. Something about precharging the motor. He didnt know much more about it either but I suspect I will get another very brief headache on acceleration.

It should not take much longer to drive his EV. Start with a full charge and stop once for 15 minutes.
The question is, can he charge at home and can he charge at your place? I would not own an EV if I couldn't charge at home.

Using my car as an example, I would charge to 95% or 100% the night before, drive most of the way depending on how I feel and Supercharger location, stop for 15 minute charge, Bio break and snack, and end up at your place.

I disagree. I think FSD is wonderful! I have 755 miles on my car and while I don’t know where to see the stats on it, probably 90% of those miles are with FSD. Once the three month free trial is up I will probably cough up the $100/mo to keep it.

Data doesn't lie though. You may like fsd but Teslas have twice the industry average of fatalities per billion vehicle miles driven. The industry average is 2.8 fatalities per billion miles driven. The model S is 5.6 fatalities and the Model Y has 10.6 fatalities per billion vehicle miles driven. Only the Hyundai Venue racked up more with 13.9 fatalities per billion vehicle miles driven. Sure cars are safer than they've ever been but when Musk openly states that Teslas fsd is 1000 times safer than a human driving it doesn't appear to be true.

BMW was supposed to start using the Tesla North American Charging Standard (NACS) recepticle in 2025. If his car does not have the NACS style, he can use an adapter.
Yes, he should be able to use the Tesla Supercahrger network which a huge advantage.

Charging at home does not trip the breaker; it is on a dedicated circuit. Our installation was done by a union electrician.
I've heard it is possible under certain circumstances, including an overloaded electrical panel, a faulty breaker, or an improperly sized breaker.

@97prizm it is critical to understand your home service panel capabilities. Assuming you can easily install a home charging system can be an expensive mistake. I tell prospective customers to make sure their panel is up to snuff. The #1 reason owners go back to ICE is charging issues.

While I’m far from a FSD fanboy, there’s not that many FSD users out there when a free trial isn’t going on. I don’t pay for it. There seems to be enough driver error from people in the fastest cars they’ve ever owned and have no idea how to handle them.

That is a big part of it. In the early 80s the Porsche 911 Turbo was affordable enough for a number of Doctors who previously probably never had driven a car that fast certainly not one rear engined. Quite a number were crashed. I rented a 2025 Toys Corolla for the week and I loved the led headlights but the radio was a tacked on tablet that was infuriating to use. I had to physically look at it to change the channel or add a channel. My current car has buttons programmed. I don't have tp look over at anything just push a button.
