+1 I'd give the slight edge to Motorcraft syn blend just because for me it been the most readily available 5w20 at Wally since the 01 Honda Ford recommendation. Always been a great everyday value in 5qt jugs too. Both MC and PYB are $11.50 a jug @Wally.

That said, all the others on the lists are fine too but MC and PYB would also be my top two.

The sad thing is that only three years ago that same oil would have set you back only $25.

Oh, the good ol' days...

Thanks for the memories! But you are correct.. I've bought hundreds of quarts of Chevron for the good old 49 cents...

And now I'm "happy" (or was

) that its $1.99?

I used it way back when. I didn`t know they still made it. I may still have a vintage mid-1980`s bottle of it around here somewhere :^)

Well it seems to me that the brand name conventional oils are all marketed for 3000 miles.

Not quite,,, ever heard of.. MOBIL CLEAN 5000? It says up to 5000 miles under "Normal driving conditions" but who drives normal?

So i figure if its good to 5000 it ought to be a sinch for 3000.(which is what i change mine at.)

Didnt know much about oils, analysis, or this site for that matter etc. but I do know they say oil has changed but here's the deal.
I have a 96 chevy silverado that i bought brand new, I now have 247,000 miles on it as of today; for the first 100,000 miles i used only Valvoline 10-30 with a FRAM
33.gif
filter.... the 2nd 100,000 miles nothing but Mobil 1 fully syn 10-30 with a FRAM
15.gif
filter last or more recent rather 47k I started on the Valvoline but the last 10k ive switched to Mobil 5k & the FRAM
31.gif
filter.. So I will most likely stick with Mobil 5k but this time from here on out a...
(drum roll please.)
(((PURE 1))) FILTER.

To see if maybe i can get 350k out of this baby. But i must say the valvo/fram has been good to me.

my other car is a Buick GN v6.

Lol, I was just in Lacombe tues and wed!

Seeing that you live in Alberta, stay away from the GTX in the winter, I love it in the summer.
I have looked at the PDS on both mobil super 1000 and esso extra and they are the same oil. Seeing that everybody likes the Mobil offering, save a few bucks and look for the Esso stuff on sale at home hardware, superstore.

My list for Alberta 8000Km oci 5w-20
1. Esso Extra aka. Mobil Super 1000. (excellent cold weather specs, proven Canadian perfomer)
2. PYB (very robust oil all around)
3. Petro-Canada Supreme (world class basestock with superb all around specs)
4. GTX (very hard to beat this oil down in hot temps)
the only reason GTX is so low is because of its cold weather specs.

I've used it a few times and I've also used it as top-off oil. Seems to work just fine.

I have no real brand loyalty (yet). I've found no real reason to become brand loyal because I haven't noticed any difference in the way any of these oils run in any of the cars I maintain. I like all of the following, in no particular order:
Pennzoil
Valvoline
Castrol GTX
Mobil Clean 5000
Havoline
Quaker State
Formula Shell
Peak
Exxon Superflo

This is why I like Havoline (and Chevron Supreme) out of all the coventional oils.

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubb...true#Post918545

Boron 72ppm
Moly 226
Phos 778
Zinc 886
Calcium 1860
Mag 41
Others Vis @ 100 9.6
Vis @ 40 59.7
VI 144
TBN 8.55

It has roughly PYB levels of calcium, but it is still loaded with moly and boron. It's also made with Chevron's excellent group II+ "IsoSyn" base stocks.

I don't know of another inexpensive conventional oil with such a nice looking add pack. Not to mention the product is pretty unique in that it is done pretty much totally in house by the refiner. Chevron basestocks along with Oronite (Chevron) add pack.

I use it in the GN. I've had better teardown results with it than with Mobil One. It's a highly underrated oil IMO.

Well the Amsoil never got ordered.Again 05 civic w/d17a1. I had QS 5w20 and dumped it in fear at 3700 kms lol. Next i dumped Castrol Gtx 5w20 at 5700 kms.Now i have a mix of 5w20/30 QS and 1L PYB 5w20, Should i dump at 8000 kms?

I do live in Lacombe ab and it is winter now. Any harm going 8000 kms on theese in 5w20 weights

Formula Shell
Quaker State

I have 6L of FS i got for 50% off and would like to get some boxing day oil stash.

My goal would be to go 8000 kms on the random $20 brand name oils that go on sale for a fraction of the cost.I now use a Napa/Wix oil filter.
