having inherited a mid nineties Tomos scooter, i would like to change the transmission fluid. The service manual gives this as the spec:

Valvomatic type A, Suffix A - SAE 10w30, ccm 330.

Any ideas what this is?

lol yes with 10w30 you will gain additional 10,75498HP wich are hidden due type A ATF fluid is so thick

Your manual say add 3,3 dcl (dunno how many quarts or oz is that...use google) of:

1) typ A ATF fluid or
2) 10w30 GL4 motocycle engine oil....

but if this is separated gearbox without clutches I am sure you can use 10w40....or 15w30 UTTO GL4 oil...

or in last case even 80w90...75w90 GL4 oil...

wich model of Tomos scooter?

I'd run 75w90 gear oil. My 1986 Honda Elite 250 said same thing....use a 30 weight. I used real gear oil. Never a problem.

This was the recommendation from old timers who had 100,000's of miles on their scooters.

They don't have gears...its a centrifugal clutch. "Transmission" is the rear end. Holds a tiny bit of oil, any kind will do.

Got it. It's a tomos Targa. Centrifugal clutch and two speed auto. Battling some bogging, which seems to be a carb issue from sitting for a few years. Two stroke with oil injection. 49cc. Not my picture, but like this. It was free and I figure the kids can use it.

Than you MUST use whether ATF A or any UTTO ( Universal Tractor Transmission Oil).....could be 10w40....10w30....15W30...

But it must be GL4 spec`d (for transmission)...

Or any motocycle GL4 oil

If you will use any other ATF ( ATF III, ....) aditive pack will cause those clutches to slip....

Thinner oil would mean more ease of part movement. up here where I am we get +90F in the summer and run 10w30 (most cars), but in the winter where it gets -5F we run 5w30. this is so that on those really cold days when the oil will run like molasses if it were a thicker oil, but with the 10w30 it stays relatively thin and takes a load off everything when trying to start.

I would like to see you riding your moped/scooter @ -5 F/-20 C

+90 F /32 C is normal operating temperature for modern equipement...

It will cause problems to Tomos older A3 engines equiped with cylinders with samller cooling fins......no problem to more modern A35/(52)55 designs with biger cooling fins

And I didnt hear that higher (90F) temperatures will cause MT gearboxes to fail ( if we simplify that particular Tomos gearbox)
