I test drove a sinister black example. The sales guy I had been emailing was busy so he asked the Sales Manager to help me. The SM copied my license, stuck a dealer tag on the trunk, threw me the keys, and said, "See you in a bit." I took it out for about 20 minutes and when I returned the SM said he was surprised I was back so soon!

What did I think? Well, it definitely has an edge to it- which I like. The throaty exhaust makes itself known at idle, and the ride quality-especially at low speeds-is very firm. The seats are extremely comfortable and the interior, while not Audi quality, looks and functions better than a BMW E90 cockpit(what's that about [censored] with faint praise?). I was prepared to hate the base audio quality, but I guess my ears have been numbed by the so-so "Hi-Fi" speakers in my wife's 3er- it was passable(and Subaru sells a speaker upgrade kit for a street price of $760 that I can install in an afternoon). The touch screen interface was logical and responsive, and there is a secondary screen which can be configured to show a boost gauge, the adjustable differential bias, etc.

Out on the road it was a hoot. With a 4.8 second 0-60 it can just barely be described as fast; it didn't feel appreciably quicker than my MS3- but then I didn't give it full throttle since it wasn't broken in. The steering is direct(there's a properly fat rim on the square bottomed wheel, by the way) and it has a nice communicative feel. STI sells an optional short shifter but I can't imagine needing it, as the stock shifter is very precise with very short throws and a well defined gate. Braking? Brembos That is one reason I won't consider a base WRX(the other is electric steering); Car and Driver wore out the pads on their Lightning Lap WRX in short order. But having said all that, handling is the main reason you buy an STI; it puts the relatively meager 305 bhp to the wheels with no drama. Just point and shoot. Again, I didn't really flog the car but the sporting goodness was still evident.

Funny thing; I guess I really am well and truly disillusioned with BMW- the Soob dealer had a F30 335i M Sport in the used lot, and I didn't even walk over to look at it or ask about the price. I guess because even If I could get it for the same price as the STI I'd still take the STI.

Excellent write-up. So, if you go with a Subbie, it's gonna be an STi for sure? Did you have ANY interest in driving a CVT? Wondering how those that don't write for a major pub feel about it.

Was the clutch pedal stiff? WRX's/STi's can be driven fast without drama in stupid ways you'd never realize until you flog one.

I love you.

I've heard that the CVT implementation in the WRX is actually pretty good- but yeah, I only want an STI.

The clutch felt fine to me; stiffer than the one in my 318ti but about the same effort as the MS3. The clutch had a pretty progressive feel to it- unlike the "digital" clutch in the Mazda, which is virtually an on-off switch.

D'OH! That's right.

Its fairly easy to drop just a tune on an sti for impressive increases in torque/hp

Although if you do and blow a ring land it might "land" you in a voided warranty.. although I've heard they are fairly relaxed on STI warranty as long as its not major abuse.

I would kill for a new manual turbo forester (why only two years!?!?!)

But yeah the new impreza/wrx/sti engage me in a way that hasn't been done since the bug eyes

I would like to boost the power a bit, but not immediately. Still, it's good to know I might have a bit of a cushion with respect to the warranty.

I agree with pretty much everything you said, having just test driven a similarly specced one (only in White), along with the M235i M-Sport (6MT/LSD/CC Brakes), and I just prefer rear wheel drive.
Considering the cost difference, though, Subaru is the winner, but the M235i isa good rreminder that BMW can build cars that put to shame everything else when "driving enjoyment" is the most important thing...

BMWs nowadays seem (to me at least) to be rolling driving computers that are terribly complex, for complexitys sake. They used to be direct, simple driving machines that required you to be a driver. Now, not so much and it isn't too unusual to see a BMW loose a comparo in a magazine - they used to be a shoo-in.
I traded in my 330ci for my Mazdaspped 3 because I perceive Mazda to be a performance car company from the bottom of the line up to the top. Hey, wait a minute! That's the way BMW used to be!
Subaru builds fun cars too!

Nice write up. But that last paragraph is so sad. I hope BMW is listening to it's client base.

There are still a couple of bright spots in their line up but their newer products seem numb to me...

Considering the '16 STI has the same drive-train as my previous car, an '08 GR, I couldn't get excited. From what I read the suspension and body have been tuned well, but the thirsty, low-power EJ engine is far from impressive these days.

With that said, I really dig the new look and modest level of tech additions. I'd strongly consider one if they have a fire sale, like they did back in '08 (not likely.)
