My beloved 22 year old cat aparantly tore a ligament or something in his right rear leg and amid all the maneurvering of him to get him to and at the vet, he's totally blown out his hip. Aside from that, he's so healthy but I think he'll have to be put down. Man, I'm tearing up just writing this. It's freakin harder to loose an animal than it is a person sometimes I swear.

GAWD I love that cat.

I know losing a pet is really hard...but please don't let a beloved pet suffer. At 22, he's lived a very full life, and until now, free from pain. Please do what's right for him, unless there's a way to fix it.

Oh, it's no questions asked, I'll put him down.

The doc seems to think if it's only a broken femer, it could be fixed pretty easily, and until we started moving him around, he didn't seem to be in pain. But now he's fallen back down on the bad hip a few times and burst out loud with pain, so after he's done getting x-rayed, I'm gonna lean on just putting him to sleep. He's had pain medication so that makes me feel better.

wow 22! That's awesome you had him for so long. Heck I'm only 26, if my cat makes it that long I'll be mid 40's when he goes

Sorry to hear about your cat. I hope something really good happens for you today, in the midst of your troubles.

Sorry to hear about your cat. Hopefully whatever he did to his hip will be easily fixable, but sometimes old age just really catches up to them.

Yea, 22 years old is essentially off the charts. My vet has a poster that shows cat and dog age compared to human age. A 17 year old cat is equivalent to a 100 year old human. It just pains me to know that otherwise, he is in such great health, but joint and bone breakage gets the best of us when we're old I guess. Same thing does people in when they get old.

We're just gonna have him put down no matter what. Even if it was something where the prospect for recovery looked good, I just don't want to put him through the helll.

This last week, my parents were out of town so he stayed with me and we had a grand ol time hangin out; him exploring the yard and sleepin on my lap and bed.

I swear, animals have souls just like us humans. The little bugger has the most concrete personality.

I agree, that sucks. Pets can become such a member of the family.

Memories are the best and rejoice in the time you spent.

Thanks guys; just got the word, broken femer. Doc says it can be repaired fairly easy, but I'm not gonna do it. He's already skin and bones and I know as he's imobile from the femer healing, he'll lose so much muscle mass that he'll just end up breaking or injuring something else.

Tough call, but you've got to do what's best for the animal. We have "Fat Mike" that's almost as old as my youngest daughter. He's so much a part of our home it's going to be an emotional issue when we're forced to put him down. I was never a "cat person" ..but have managed to form the odd relationships you can have with them (we have a few and two dogs). Mike "demands" his breakfast as a full partner in the household..stuff like that. One day you find yourself saying "Hi, Mike" and interacting with him. Wife started buying "Mikey's chicken" ..and he lets you know when you're not doing your job.

My cat and Mike must be cousins. My Spuds "demands" a meal about every 4 hours (quite vocally, but he's def).

I formed the odd relationship with him about 15 years ago when I was a young'en, and now he's one of the highlights of my life.

It is really uncanny how they manage to communicate (somewhat) on our level ..at least to the point that they're understood in terms of what they view as wants and needs. Even my less than articulate Rot-Lab will politely bring the empty food bowl in her jaws to show that it needs my attention (she's not malnourished ..by any means).

Well we put him down this morning. Tough deal but it was the right thing to do. On the x-rays, his femer was bent back so much, it would have been ____ on earth for him to recover.

Thanks fellas.

Sorry to hear about your loss as well Brett.
