Apollo 11 goes into lunar orbit. It's the 20th in Australia though, which marks the 35th anniversery of the lunar landing.

Correct! Now who would realise that Aussies got to see Armstrong step on the moon before anybody else? The signals came through Island Lagoon tracking station, (DSS41) the first deep-space station established outside the US. I was actually a school kid at the Woomera Area School so got to see it earlier than most if only by fractions of a second. Still one of the biggest memories of my life. Sadly operations ceased Dec 22nd 1972 and the 26-metre antenna was sold for scrap.

Ah yes, the moonwalk.
A bunch of friends and acquaintances were sitting around the campfire this weekend reminiscing about it.
Most of them told how their folks had let them stay up SO late to watch it on TV.
I didn't share my memory of the Dorm Mom deciding it was probably ok for the women to be on the men's side of dorm (only lounge with a TV) "after hours" to watch it.

I saw that movie a few weeks ago. it's very good.
Look for it at Family Video.

When I was young the symbols and images of Apollo seemed so vibrant. Now, they seem rather old and tired, tattered around the edges.

Even the video images today seem blurry...

It's been a long time. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin have gone from having ticker-tape parades to obscurity. I was a huge space buff and could write a really long piece about why I think the manned space program is moribund today, but few of you would really want to read it. Suffice it to say that I doubt we'll ever return to the moon, let alone send humans to Mars--though China could surprise us all. And even if that happened, few Americans or other Westerners would think it mattered.

July 18th was the 35th anniversity of Chappaquiddick.

So hoist a tall one in honor of that heroic statesman Ted "Hic" Kennedy.
