To use Amsoil or Redline that is the question

HI all, I have thought about trying a Full Synthetic oil in some of my V8 engines.

I can get the Amoil for $60 or the Redline for $120, from what I can gather there does seem to be a ever so slight lean toward the redline oil as being better, so would I be missing out if I went Amsoil?

Old Style V8 push rod engines, both Flat Tappet and Roller styled.

Well, you will probably get a lot of different responses but I would say Redline but with that difference in price Amsoil looks pretty good. If you want a good synthetic for even less you could go with the Pennzoil Platinum, Valvoline Synpower, Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec which are pretty easy to find. Best of luck.

Don't know how easy it is to find Platinum or Synpower in Australia. But it looks like your looking for at least a PAO synthetic oil. Of the two you mentioned I would say the Amsoil. Just my opinion.

We have Valvoline SynPower 10W/50. I was not sure if that was in the same league as Redline and Amsoil.

I sent an email asking Valvoline a few months ago asking about using it in 1960's to 80's style V8's and they said that had heard of several issues with Rollers and valve train in these style of engines and suggest I would be better with a Semisyn.

For high temperature/high performance applications I'd give the nod to Redline. For extended drains, Amsoil no question. You might need the high zinc/phosphorus levels of the RL for that engine. However, the latest SM chemistry in the Amsoil should be fine.

The Aussies should have Shell Helix full synthetic which should be a good PP replacement.

But of the 2 listed for everyday use and longer drain intervals Amsoil.
Racing it, then Redline.

HOw does the Valvoline SynPower 10W/50 stand up to the Red Line and Amsoil or even M1?. IS that a PAO?

Have you looked for used oil analysis for these oils with engines of the type you have?
