In a few more thousand miles I'm going to change or flush my ATF in my 07 tundra 5.7. The shops with the machine say it's very beneficial to flush all the old lubricant out...The other shops(without the machine)say it does more harm than good to flush the system. They would rather drop the pan change the filter and add 40% new oil. Can you do both? What is the general feeling about all of the above?

Drop the pan? My friend's 2002 4.7 has a drain plug; it gets about 1/3 of the fluid out (4 qts)

I'd do the drain and fill if there isn't 100K on the fluid.

There have been quite a few threads on this recently.

Most shops don't even do a flush with chemicals or back pressure, they just do an exchange. On an exchange, the machine just collects the old fluid and allows the tranny to draw in new fluid.

Your Tundra will have a drain plug. About 4 qts come out. These tranny's are very difficult to service. There is no dipstick so filling it requires the use of long tubing usually snake through the engine bay. I would make sure that whoever services your Tundra knows exactly what they are doing.

The filter should be changed if it has one. Then immediately a total fluid exchange. Many places call it a flush but its really a total fluid exchange. Don't believe any place that says their flush machine will clean the filter, it won't and it can't. The machine allows them to charge you and do something else for 15-20 min.

Avoid any chemical additives to clean or condition, its a transmission, not your wife's hair.

Amsoil ATF would always be my first choice for ATF. An inline Magnefine filter ($20) will pretty much avoid fooling with the vehicle's internal filter for a long long time and filter much better.

my toyota dealer drops the pan.. so find out what your local dealer does and do the same. doubt anything more is necessary.

Not sure its that simple. Maybe they do not have a flush machine and push the pan drop & refill? Maybe they make more $$ with a pan drop and refill? Maybe they feel both should be done but feel most customers would never go for both, so they pick the more important.

Your trans really needs a filter change especially early on as that is when most debris is generated. So do a pan drop and filter change the first time, then an exchange the next. #0k to 60k miles depending on duty cycle. Magnefine in line filter recommended.

Note that there seems to be no such thing as a "Flush" machine, meaning nothing is force fed. Your own trans does the work and fluid follows the exact same paths it would normally. No harm at all if performed carefully and can easily be done in the driveway with a bucket!
