I made ONE mistake.

I'm currently running a Mobil 1 filter on it not the PureONE this time. I said I wasn't sure on mileage but 9k-10k is a good bet.

As others have said the OLM has not lit yet.

If you can afford to go on a 1K trip, you can afford the $30.00 it would cost you to pick up a jug of M1 0W-20 at Wally and a P1 at AAP.
I'd personally change it.
If you'd rather not, the highway miles will be very easy on the oil and the P1 should have no trouble going another few thousand.
If you don't want to change the oil now, the filter should be just fine.
Check the filter forum for pics of Purolator oil filters that have been run long mileages.
They hold up very well.

M1 or P1, advice stands. Not that it really matters in this case imo, but the M1EP is considered an extended oci filter.

Chek the oil level, top up if needed, and roll. And keep in mind, Honda's general recommendation is to change the OF every other oci.

Thank you for all of the replies.

with the M1 filter and 0W20 just how long is recommended by most if it is 99% highway miles?

I would love if I could get by with 12k-15K per change without risking anything.

Take your trip, collect a sample when you get back and change the oil, and get a UOA done. That'll show you how your engine is doing and how long you can extend your intervals.

If you can't afford it, just leave it. Just make sure the basic maintenance things are good, like oil level and tire pressures.

But I question how can you afford fuel for a 1000mile trip then (at 30mpg, this is 33gallons*$4=$132 just in fuel.

It's a trip...oil loves trips, as the engine is up to temp...for hours, no cold starts and short drives for all of those hours, and you aren't wailing on it.

A 1,000 mile return trip is 2 more cold starts, and a chance to boil off any fuel and water.

Which is fuel and water that you don't likely have, as your commute is also a decent trip

Paper (like filters and the like) don't like prolonged temps, but are pretty well established in the automotive field as current practice.

So if you change the oil pre-trip the new oil will get an easy ride back to the commute.

If you change the oil post trip, then early on in the trip, the water and fuel will have burned off, and maybe a top-off later, you'll still be in a good place...

1000 miles isn't anymore preparing the mules and packing the wagon, have a nice trip, and change when you get back.

Change it when you come back, at 10k it would be just right on Honda's recommended OCI for most engine without OLM, and like Shannow said oil loves trips as they burn off fuel and water.

Change it! don't be a tightwad like half the yahoos on this board, you want to or you wouldn't have asked

Is it that the oil filter media can't take sustained periods of use or is it that it becomes 'full'? I'd assume that so long as your air filtration is good and sealed, that changing out the oil filter sooner than the OCI would be unnecessary. And don't filters filter more as they are used? Just the flow rate might go down, but there shouldn't be much [dirt] for the oil filter to capture if your air filter is doing it's job at being the first in line defense against insolubles. I've always thought of my engine air filter as the more important filter versus the oil filter.

I agree. The air filter is more importance than the oil filter, and all filters(oil-air-fuel ...) are becoming more efficient as they are used until they are clogged with debris. Most oil filter dust holding capacity is more than 10 grams, if there is more than 10 grams of dust and/or metal in the oil filter in less than 15k miles then the engine is dying.

Honda recommends changing oil filter at second oil change for most engines. I personally use a filter for 1 year in my cars, the LS400 may have 2 oil changes a year with dino but its oil filter was changed at 1 year interval, and it has low to mid priced oil filter such as Motocraft FL400S, Proline from Pep Boys, P1 ...

Honda recommended 20,000 mile FILTER changes (every other) for years, and we never heard of Honda's blowing up. Your filter will be fine. Just top if off and go on that 1000 mile trip.
